I have a Pioneer VSX-D509S receiver. When I bought it 2 years ago, it was over $300.

It has started with a problem in the subwoofer out. I know it's a problem with the receiver, because this is the second one I have had that has this problem. (I returned the first because the problem started immediately, and was given a new one, that was nice enough to wait over a year to exhibit the same problem.)

Anyway, I called a repair shop, and they figure it'll be $100 or more to fix this problem. Should I get the 509S fixed, or just buy a new receiver? I'm looking at the Onkyo 494/595, or the Denon 1802.

How much of a difference is there between the Pioneer and the other two I am looking at?

The new receivers will have more audio decoding and I/O options. For unprocessed 2ch sound, I think it will be a matter of preference. Go listen to them and make up your own mind. Personally, if the same model of receiver kept breaking I wouldn't fix or exchange it... I'd get another (more reliable) brand.

If I keep buying new receivers, I'll have one for every room in the house!

Or you could go here:

and get the 709S with an extended warranty. This is one of the best buys out there for folks on a budget.

Otherwise, the 494 is a solid entry level with DPLII and decent quality. The 1802 is a great step-up but needs a decent remote. The 595 is getting in short supply now that the 600 is out and it does have a great remote.
