Fixing Wavy Da-Lite Pull Down Screen

10087 Views 13 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  KevinQ
I have Da-lite model b (c?) pull down screen, 120" diagonal. It sucks because there are v-shaped waves which look horrible. Pull-Down is not important for me.

If I were to remove the screen from it's mount and roll, how could I mount it to a frame? Can I add grovets to it?

Any suggestions one tightening it while leaving it on the roll mechanism?

David-

You could try attaching weights or rubber bands at the ends of the lower rod to try to correct for the "V". This has worked for a few.

I don't see why you couldn't use just the material on some sort of frame. I would try velcro first. Seems like this would be the simplest, boo-boo proof way to go.

David,

Material that is to be fitted to a frame has some give so that a flat fit can be achieved. Your screen has no give (stretch). It will be extremely difficult to mount it to a frame and get it mounted perfectly flat. Regards.
Does this mean that even if I pull tightly and mount it on a frame, that I will not get it perfectly flat?

Why would this be a problem?

David,

I had the same problem with my 120" screen! What I did is cut up 6" strips of file folder paper and in the down position put it up in the roller. This pulled up on the "V" sag and made the screen much flatter. I also did the homemade tensioning for the bottom. It also helped. I have since replaced my screen with a powered tab tension screen and couldn't be happier.

Hope this helps!

It's a problem because the material has no give, thus no margin for error. Material mounted on a frame needs some give to achieve proper flatness.
IT WORKS!!!!

THANK YOU RICK S...THANK YOU!!!

David,

I'm glad that it worked out for you!

I have an 80" wide Da-Lite "C" screen which is basically a "B" with beefier rollers and bearings. My waves are not V shaped but rather parallel from the sides. This didn't look all that bad with my old single-lens ECP Graphics projector, but with the new three lens Marquee 8501LC looks awful. The geometry of the lenses makes for differing color of white at different parts of the waves! http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/frown.gif

Has anyone tried some horizontal rods placed behind the screen, pulling on the sides? I'm going to rig something up and get back to you.

Well shoot. I tried lots of schemes to pull the edges outwards, but nothing really cleaned up the vertical waves.

Observation #1: these untensioned screens aren't too bad with single lens projectors, but are awful with three lens projectors due to color shift. With my single lens ECP Graphics, it wasn't so bad. But with a Marquee 8501LC, the color shift in the waves was so noticeable that black and white films became unwatchable. On one side of the wave it would be bluish, on the other side reddish.

Observation #2: I blew it off and ordered a Vutec Vu-easy screen. If a cheapskate like me buys another screen it must be for a reason.
Boy Vutec got that screen to me in a hurry. I put it up last night. There is such a difference between it and a Model C. Skys are now evenly blue. There is a lot less fatigue watching films now. And somehow Vutec's 1.5 gain material doesn't have "sparkles" in it like the 1.5 gain Da-lite material. I can't believe how good my system looks with a proper screen. Vutec seems to be a real winner.

Dennis,

Would you mind answering a few questions? What screen model, size, motorized, tensioned, price (if you don't mind), did you go through a dealer, etc? Thanks

Scott
It's the Vu-easy model. This is a fixed screen, with an aluminum frame. The screen material is attached via velcro, which allows for adjustment and prevents the puckering which may occur with snap fasteners. Mine is 60" by 80" with Britewhite material (1.5 gain). I bought it from Hi-Rez, just click on the button above. About $550 IIRC. The prices keep changing on this as they keep changing the specifications. The black "velvet" covering for the frame is now standard.

I'm mounting it in front of my patio door, so I am mounting it so it can be swung up as a unit and stored flat near the ceiling. Untensioned pulldown screens are about $250, fixed screens like this are $550, and tensioned pulldown screens are over $1000. You figure out what's the best deal.... http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/wink.gif
RickS, I need the same info. I have a Model C still in the box awaiting installation. From the posts I've read, I'm a little worried that I chose poorly, but I can't afford a top-notch screen. Also, what do you mean by "homemade tensioning"?

Thanks,

KevinQ
