One of my 5508's (unmodded) has recently developed a finicky IR receiver. At seemingly random times unrelated to whether or not the unit is recording (and I don't have IVS enabled), it will suddenly become very reluctant to accept RC key presses unless I hold the remote 1 inch from the IR receiver. This behavior may last from a few minutes to 30 minutes or more, then it reverts to acting normally. It's definitely not the remote, as I've tried multiple remotes with fresh batteries. Cycling power always brings things back to normal. The unit has no operational problems otherwise. Can the IR receiver go bad, and can it be replaced?
I would first look for an inadvertently activated IR remote in the same room. Barring that, for a source of IR such as sunlight or some other light source (fluorescent lights, heat lamps, etc).
There were a bad batch of IR panels that made it into the later 5000 and early 5500 production models. It can be repaired or replaced. Typical failures were blinking or erratic power LED illumination. Erratic IR response including deteriorated IR response within minutes of rebooting. Here is a link I put together showing how to replace it http://home.comcast.net/~mikemenard/...lacement2.html
I have replacement panels on hand. Email me if I can be of service.
