Flashing Radeon 7500 OEM bios to retail ATI bios ?

2554 Views 29 Replies 14 Participants Last post by  Phat Phreddy
Has anyone flashed an OEM 7500 radeon with a genuine ATI bios, so the cheap card can be used with ATI drivers?

Finding a genuine ATI 7500 here in England is just about impossible now.

You never know if a card advertised is a real ATI or 'powered by ATI'

Most of us with Radeon 'LE' flashed our cards with DDR bios some time ago, so will this work with 7500, if the correct bios can be found/extracted from a retail ATI card?

http://www.home.zonnet.nl/Hoek89/ had the software, but has gone now.

If ATI stop people having the software for download, then I guess the software worked OK ;)

Hi Mark:

___If you do a web search, you can still find the file entitled FlashRadeon8500.zip from a few open ftp sites. If you cannot find it, reply to me privately and I will attach it to the reply …

Hypothetically, could one use the FlashRadeon8500.zip on a 7500 card?

Would it work?

Thanks,

James
Does this mean that if I bought a "Powered By ATI" Gigabyte Radeon 7500 ,and I will, I can flash it to the Retail Radeon 7500 "Built By ATI" and then use the STANDARD ATI drivers for it ??
Hello Wayne,

I have found a file Flashradeonv201.zip , that contains 26 files, a good selection of bios files for 7500 and 8500.

This is said to be a more recent version than the one you mention,

I better not put any links to it,

sort of an underground thing ;)

Thanks for your help,

Mark G.

Hi Mark:

___First off, thanks for the links. I don’t use the 7500’s due to the limited driver set from ATI but at least I have some more tools for the 7500/8500 owners … After JamesAB’s question, I looked inside the 8500.zip file only to find 8500 series BIOS’ … I than also looked for the Flashradeonv201.zip and found it as well.

___As far as where to find it for the rest of the 7500/8500 owners … You will find it somewhere on this site without to much effort ;)

___JamesAB, no. At least I would not try it myself. Different cores and clocks make for an incompatibility and possibly an unrecoverable mess afterwards.

___Minaelromany, after reading up on some posts over at Rage3D from those that have flashed there own 7500’s/8500’s, it appears that what you seek is exactly what you will receive ;) I am also reading of greater stability using the ATI retail BIOS’ on both the 7500 and 8500’s as well … If you do flash your 7500 series card, please let us know how it goes.

___Good Luck

It works. My "OEM" 7500 now works with 6025 drivers in Win2k.

This makes my day:D

Wayne ,

Actually I am getting the card later this month and WILL flash it ,if anything goes wrong I will replace it, They know nothing about these things here in Egypt , :D

Then I will let you know..

JamesAB

Is your card a 'Powered By ATI' or 'Built By ATI' card ?
Hi JamesAB,

Can you tell me what's the improvement you get after you flash your 7500 with Flashradeonv201.zip? I am thinking of doing this also but would like to know what will I get for doing this.
calvinci,

For me the biggest advantage is the freedom to use any of the Radeon drivers, not just the reference drivers.

Perhaps someone with more technical knowledge of these cards can explain exactly what the difference between the OEM and Retail BIOS are.

-James
minaelromany,

Sorry I missed your question in my last post. The card I flashed was "Powered by ATI".

-James
Hi JamesAB:

___You flashed your 7500 with an 8500 BIOS? We are speaking of not only different cores, clocks, and memory but a completely different card! I am assuming you flashed your OEM 7500 to the Retail 7500’s, correct? In any case, I have read of better overall stability but there are some voltage mods that should be performed for the 8500 owners to get the OEM cards to work at the higher clocks of the Retails. I bitched at Stephen for this craziness a few months ago and he said the OEM’s have different build spec’s or something similar. I mentioned Nvidia’s reference drivers working with all cards and by all appearances, ATI is pulling the wool over our eyes once again trying to differentiate a product that for all intents and purposes is the same barring slower speed memory spec’ed from the OEM themselves.

Wayne,

Is this thread okay, or should I report it to the moderator?

Just to be clear. I used the Flashradeonv201.zip (available at the site you posted) to flash my OEM Radeon 7500 with the retail 7500 BIOS. I just unzipped the file, rebooted to DOS, and ran 'START2.EXE'. I used the program to back up my original BIOS and then flashed the card with the retail BIOS. Then one reboot later, I was done.

Hi JamesAB:

___Of course this thread is Ok … That is until someone comes by and complains about it ;) When the Radeon “LE†was first discovered, we all jumped all over the flash for gaming performance alone and ATI did not climb down our throats for it. We will have to see.

___As far as the 7500 OEM to Retail, that is just how it is supposed to happen :D

___Good Luck and enjoy the 6025’s. They are one of the better pure HTPC drivers available to us currently.

I've been success so far with Sapphire Radeon 7500 flash with "Built by ATI Radeon" cards. This has been very crucial to my "home system" being able to accept any ATI based driver. This would not be such a big issue were it not for the fact that every other ATI driver acts different, it's enough to drive you mad. ATI's drivers interact with DVD players with absolutely no rhyme or reason, and consistantly unpredictable from one build to the next. I highly recommend this for those who use a 7500 "Powered by ATI" cards so that you can use a known "good" driver.

can an oem 7200 be flashed with ati bios? if so where do you find the bios and flash utility?
Rick,

In my case, I copied the BIOS info from an original ATI card using a flash utility from some Russian site. I didn't check the other site mentioned above by James so you may want to check his resource.

The link appears to be broken for the flash utility. I have a SAPPHIRE Radeon 7500 I purchased from Digital Connection. Can someone send me a new link or email it to me?

Thanks,

Kerry
Hi Kdraper:

___You don’t need to flash an OEM Radeon anymore. Just follow up Ashley’s tip on modifying the driver inf so that the ATI originals will install and your set. I posted the link to the thread with Ashley’s instructions just yesterday for Dean Roddey if that helps.

Shouldn't be enough to install all type of drivers just by manually pointing to the atidrive folder ?

I made some test on a new Sapphire7500 and i had no trouble going through the display properties / advanced / card / driver...... have disk.

Or this is just valid for efg certified drivers ?

thx
