Flat Speaker Wire

640 Views 10 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  Kal Rubinson
I was thinking about using this to wire my surrounds, so that I can run the wire up and across the wall under my acoustic treatment's. Anybody use this wire before? It look's like a great way to go. I use all Audio Quest wire for my speakers. So sound is very important to me. Thanks Redhouse

The only flat wire I've seen and used has all been 16 ga wire....it works well for my surrounds but YMMV. I've not seen heavier gauge wire in that configuration but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

In addition to Goertz and Nordost, there are many flat cables on the market. However, I see no specs for capacitance or inductance at the decorp site.

Thanks guys, I found decorp from doing a google search for flat speaker wire. I have also looked for the Acoustic Research's flat wire, with no luck finding it. I would like to buy flat wire, if someone can recommend it and if they have good reviews and specs about it. Do you have any links with more info. on Flat wire, or a good company that makes and sell's flat wire?
The Nordost 2 flat looks like it would work good, but there's no dealer anywhere close to me. Anyone know a Nordost dealer online?

I do not but I am sure that Nordost does.:)

Kal, what flat wires do you think would work and sound great? I don't know anything about them, I have not heard any yet. Are flat wires any good? Thanks Redhouse

Round, flat, triangular or oblong, copper wire is copper wire, is copper wire.

Yes but, depending on shape and configuration of the conductors, the capacitance and inductance will vary and could result in impedance variations with frequency that affect the sound and/or contribute to amp instability. Note, for example, that Goertz supplies small Zobel (RC) networks with their cables to compensate for this.

Copper wire is copper wire but parallel conductors influence each other.

P.S.: I cannot recommend anything since my personal experience with flat cables is limited but continuing.

Yes, but with so much power going through the wires (100's of watts) small variations probably won't matter much.

However, if the cable were carrying line level audio... that maybe a different story.

Small variations? What I am talking about is the effective load on the amp which may exhibit instability. Believe me, I have experienced it with a few amps that, otherwise, are quite excellent.

Roll-off can be an issue at the high impedance loads with which interconnects work.
