I am looking for CHEAP floorstanding speakers for a secondary room. These are going to be used for watching TV, some movies, and music. I am interested to know what you would say the best speakers are for the least amount of money. Thanks

Self powered? Unpowered, i.e., driven by the tv or (some) receiver? What speaker resistance? power handling? To be used with/without sub? More details about how they will be used...

I have an old Denon receiver (1707) that I will be using. I don't want to buy a sub if I don't have to. I am looking for entry level speakers but I want the best quality for the money. These are mainly going to be used by my wife for music. I have the good stuff in the basement and she wants something upstairs "for her."

So which is it, TV or music?

Polk monitor 50's are pretty cheap. $109 ea at newegg.com'

If you can spend just a little more look at the Athena LS-300

Same speaker here they charge shipping, depending where you live might be cheaper.

The best speakers for the least amount of money are going to be used on craigslist or at the thrift store. I picked up a pair of used polk RTA11T's and monitor 4.5's for $100 on CL. Deals like that don't come up everyday. You have to be patient.

New polk speakers were way too bright for me when listening to music.

Sony SSF-5000, $112 shipped @ Amazon for the pair. I have them in my bedroom connected to my PC and TV and they are very decent speakers for the money.

2/22 - Thank you Skeeterfood for the tip on the good deal on the Polks...

Just what I was looking for the bedroom setup...and a bargain at $240/pair with free shipping!

2/23 - Incredibly, these arrived this evening - the day after I ordered them. I did pay $2.99 for expedited shipping, but apparently their warehouse is in NNJ - where I live. Need to let them warm up to room temp before hooking them up, but will report back when I do.

I have never heard of Fluance, anyone have any expierence with this brand?

I have no experience w/ them but it seems the basic materials they used are exactly the same as what you would find in a low end Paradigm or virtually any other name brand speakers mid to low end offerings. MDF cabinets with silk dome tweeters, treated paper drivers with butyl rubber surrounds.

Looking forward to your thoughts on the Polk 60s JdJaye... $120 each seems reasonable. I want to get a denon 1610 or 1910 with a 5.1 system but looking at speakers 1st.
