Foam to fill holes

465 Views 4 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  DMF
Just finshing up..couple of pionts in the basement that need to be left accesable..drain access in walls, water access, valves, etc. So i could not cut the drywall to tight. Is there a type of foam [like in a can] that i can ealiyl and safely use to fill in these areas, sand then paint over. That would look better then gaps, and i could remove it easily if i need access. TIA

Home Depot, Lowes, etc. sell canned foam for sealing around pipes, etc. $5 - $6 dollars per can. don't get the stuff on you because it won't wash off, it wears off. Also, it will ruin clothes. Otherwise, it's great stuff.
Also don't overfill the gaps as it expands a lot! If you overfill it can cause problems (e.g. if you use to seal a door frame it can bow the frame!
The spray foam in a can is sticky when dry. I can't imagine filling a gap in drywall and expecting to easuly remove the panel to access a water shut off valve.
Don't use the DAP version of expanding foam. The cans are less expensive but there's much less foam in them. And they use a water base (I think) so the foam takes forever to dry.
