I'm a long time lurker and have finally decided to buy a projector. While waiting for the 11ht to go on sale, I am building a screen.

I cut the wood and used a biscuit cutter and biscuits and glued it up.

This shows the frame hanging from some aluminum angle. I know, I know, my speakers are too close to the wall, but I wanted the biggest possible for the space (87x50.6). The TV sits on a standard Gusdorf stand, and I've removed the equipment shelves and door and my center speaker sits in that little cave on a wedge. That hole low on the right is my attempt at an IB sub to go along with the Sunfire. The folding door is impossible to seal or to keep from rattling!

By hanging it on those strips of aluminum I can fold it up, placing the top edge in a bracket just in front of the curtain. The bottom is held up by pins thru the angle in holes in the edges.

I am truly thankful that I found this forum.

John,

Cool screen idea!

Regarding your speaker placement -- how about just underneath the corners of your screen (closer to the floor than now), and angled up towards your listening position. R

Or, at least try some acoustic foam against the wall just in front of their current position.

Good luck,

Jim

Thanks to all for the comments.

Jim: The speakers are sitting on cabinets with glass doors. If I put them on the floor they'll block them. I think I will use some kind of fabric on the walls, however. My other problem is a seating distance of only nine feet. I have looked at a 10ht and didn't see pixels at that distance, but I must go back to verify.

Since I started this thread I have changed my projector choice and have ordered a Sharp Z9000.

I made some mattes by cutting 2 inch strips of black foam board. I went to a body shop and had some strips of sheet metal cut in widths of 1 and 2 inches. I made the vertical mattes by putting together two strips of foam board, gluing them with 2 inch sheet metal at the joint and gluing 1 inch metal the rest of the length. The horizontal mattes were made the same with the 2 inch metal at the center. (the foam board is 40 inches long, so I used 2 pieces with a 3 inch piece in the middle, glued securely to the metal)

Hard to see the strips of metal in these pictures.

I drilled shallow holes 1 inch from the edge of the screen frame at 10-11 inch intervals and tapped in round ceramic magnets. Got the magnets from Lowes, the box says 3/4 inch. You can drill an 11/16 inch hole and the magnet is an interference fit.

Here's the finished screen, made from stretched blackout cloth. I will probably cover the mattes with duvetyne. The mattes are easily placed on the screen. Will make another horizontal set about 7 inches wide for 2.35 aspect ratio. Can't wait for the projector.

They are not working for me either. The properties of the second set of pics are: file:///c:/ht/scrn8.jpg which indicates it's on a local drive I believe.

Nice work on the screen in the first section though. :)

I've heard a lot about this Blackout cloth. Anyone have some pictures, places to buy etc? How did everyone attach it to the frame?

I think I'm going to start working the frame like mcFoo did. I really like that.
