Since it seems that most of you think the PS3 is a great BD player I wanted to start this thread to show that for me the PS3 sucks as a BD player because it does not downscale BD movies to 720p and according to experts and my TV movies look better in 720p than 1080i. Just search for 720p vs. 1080i. So unless your TV's native resolution is 1080p/i then you should feel the same because as good as your TV is in downscaling it is still best if you can feed it its native resolution and from what I read most current TVs don't do a good job of downscaling 1080i to 720p. If you think I'm wrong please tell me what I am missing.

I'm sorry if this upsets some people but In case God is looking down on this forum I wanted Him/Her to know that I for one think the PS3 sucks.

Thank you.

Word is that Sony is working on a software scaling solution for the PS3. I personaly am not affected since I use my A-1 for upscaling my SD DVD's and have a native 1080P tv. The next gen formats are 1080P based and are cutting edge tech. It takes time for the kinks to be worked out and for solutions to be found for people with older equipment. If the PS3 doesnt meet your needs then you should return it and find a player that does. Or buy a 1080P tv. Living here on the edge is expensive and everything doesnt go smoothly. We pay so that J6P can enjoy it later and we can enjoy it now.

Good luck.

As far as scaling goes, most HDTV's in the market do an admirable job handling 1080i feeds. If anyone has a native 720P tv, then they already know this. If your particular tv doesn't do a good job with 1080i, then, yes, that sucks for you.

If it looks horrible, then it's your TV or cables. I haven't seen one setup yet where any of the movies I have look horrible (as long as the transfer is decent) in fact they look pretty outstanding, so I suspect either you have some equipment/calbing issues , bad disc transfer or you are just spewing FUD.

Hopefully sony will introduce upscaling for DVD's and proper BD scaling for those who don't have the latest and greatest tv's.

I use the same cable that I used for my PS2. I watched MI3 and KOH, supposedly 2 of the best looking movies in the BD format. The picture doesn't look horrible but not as good as 720p. I compare it to PQ coming from Fox and 360 HD-DVD player.

edit: btw, i know it's not the cables because i watch 720p with demos and trailers.

What's the difference? Your tv scaling from 1080i to 720p or the blu-ray player scaling from 1080i/p to 720p? NO blu-ray films are in NATIVE 720p so you will never get that Native 720p source that you are looking for on ANY blu-ray player, be it the PS3 or the Pioneer Elite etc.

Do you have other devices that output to 1080i? What is that PQ? Because if it is also bad, then it's not the PS3 that sucks but rather your TV's 1080i display.

Yes. I get HD from Time Warner. PQ is better then PS3 on 1080i and with Discovery HD is a lot better. I think the issue here is what is fed to my TV. Otherwise how do you explain such an excelent PQ from Discovery HD as opposed to the PS3? They are both fed via component.

But my point is I WANT MY 720P!

Your in luck.. There are other Blu-ray players for you to choose.

The PS3 is what it is, I take it you purchased before you found out it did not have a scaler in it?

1080i is one standard resolution all displays should be able to produce a very nice PQ with, even if it does go to 540p first, I think my projetcor does too, but dang the image is still fantastic. Most or at least many devices do this also, I would not be so sure the PS3 wouldn't do this as well.

I just don't see it as the worst thing in the world. But there are other options out there for you.

Well I don't know about anyone else but my projector is 720P and 1080i looks amazing on it. I have my Denon 3910 and my HD A1 both set to 1080i because they look better than the 720P. My Dish DVR is the only thing that looks better at 720. And my PS3 looks freaking AWESOME!!!!

I'm sorry Alan but your new title is incorrect. PS3 does not output 720p with BD for any TV.

edit: I thought i was very polite in my OP. I said that for me PS3 sucks. Maybe the word sucks is inappropriate. It it is then I wish I used another word.

aviguy,

Will the PS3 not output 1080i/p because of an HDMI connection?

That is the problem I had with my old projector. Running it via HDMI/DVI would not let me select 1080 as the output on any of my sources. Thus the picture suffered.

That is why I upgraded my PJ to a 1080p "Pearl". Expensive fix but worth it in my opinion.
