Hello,

This may be a stupid question but I guess that is what these forums are for.  I just have a question about which of the formats is better.  I have a Sony STR-DG820 that has all of the symbols of your normal audio formats (D+EX True HD, DTS-HD, Neutral THX, DMPORT, Analog, LPCM).

My question is out of those which is the best format that the amp should be using.  I assume it probably depends on the disc and the player also but when playing a Blue Ray on a PS3 which would be the best.  I have set up the receiver according to the manual and no matter what I play it always goes to the Linear PCM [48] on the receiver screen.  I don't know why it seems to me that one of the others would be better but it does.  Maybe it is because it is the last one on the receiver or doesn't have a sexy name but it seems like maybe one of the others would be better.

Any information would be appreciated.  I am certainly not an expert but if I am watching a movie I would like it to be with the best sound possible.

Thanks

There is nothing at all wrong with 48 kHz sampled PCM. A lot of material that is delivered in higher sample rate formats was upsampled from lower sample rate masters. Upsampling does not change the sound quality of the origional source. It's just 48 K sound quality spread over more bits.

This does not include the possibility that a higher sample rate version may also be remastered, whose beneficial effects if any are audible at any reasonable sample rate.
