Sorry if this is neither new nor interesting news, but up until now all the HD content I'd seen from HBO (via TWC in NYC) was 16:9. I watched Forrest Gump yesterday and it looked somewhere around 2.2 or 2.35:1. Picture was very nice.
It was transferred to HD before HBO execs had the bright idea of butchering films.
HDTV appeals to well-educated people with disposable cash. These people are not likely to be ignorant of the raison-de-etre of original aspect ratio.
HBO hosted an outdoor party a few months ago where Roger Ebert was a guest. He was horrified to note that HBO was playing a movie from the 1940's, whose Original Aspect Ratio was 4:3. HBO had cropped off the top and bottom to 16:9. This company deserves our money? I think not.
