some games will support keyboard and mouse, I only know of one so far; UT3. However, you may be interested in this peripheral from SplitFish, The FragFX

hey thanks. i should receive my ps3 soon. im looking for a racing wheel and pedals, also a good racing game to start out on. any recommendations on both?
On a side, I was the same way too and COD4 was my first time ever using a gaming console controller. It was quite the adjustment to get use to it but the learning curve was quick. So hard at first but I got over it soon enough.

Logitech G25, GT5 Prolouge. End of story.

Back on topic.

I'd recommend staying away from splitfish's controller. It really isn't an improvement over the sixaxis at all, especially for a PC FPS'er (and it is a regression in some ways).

It might work better if the programming was tweaked quite a bit and if the sixaxis analog sticks weren't 8 directional in the first place (at least, they feel that way, more or less)
DIRT is another fun racing game, and Burnout paradise (not exactly a Sim...) is coming out next week. There are already some reviews up and it's averaging about 90.

Do you have the FragFX? I understand that out-of-the-box, it definately it won't be much good. However, downloading the current firmware and tweaking the settings makes all the difference from what I've heard, and reading the manual to make the appropriate changes in the PS3 settings.

Mine's arriving today, and I'll post back my thoughts once I have it updated and have a chance to use it.

Rambler, that was my experience.

I received mine as a gift just after COD4 came out, so I've had a decent amount of time to evaluate it's use, and well it's not the end-all-be-all of controllers it does deliver as advertised, once all the updates and sensitivity adjustments are completed that is.

It's a night and day difference over the sixaxis, IMO - again not to be confused with a traditional mouse per say but a vast improvement in general control is very apparent, especially in FPS...obviously.

Definitely give us your perspective, once you've had a few hours with it that is

Will do!

And this is exactly what I want, so I think I'll be good to go.

Well, I got the FragFX and had a little bit of time to use it. First thing I did was update to the latest firmware from Splitfish's web site. Then I hooked it up to the PS3, adjusted CoD4's sensitivity to max and set the FragFX's to 1. Then I played one of the Arcade modes to get the feel of it.

First impressions are that it feels like it could've been made a little bit more sturdy, but I guess for the price it's okay. And maybe my hands are a little larger than what the target audience for the FragFX is, or that I need more time to be able to get the feel of the mouse and its PS3 buttons on the side - I keep moving my hands around the mouse in order to be able to get button presses done quickly. If the mouse was larger I don't think I'd have any issues. But in the limited time I spent with it, I was definately more accurate in CoD4 lining up the gun sights. It just takes a little time getting used to.

I plan on downloading and installing the FragFX PC utility that allows customization of the buttons. Out of the box, I think they take a little too much pressure to activate, at least with my hands. But this may also be due to not yet finding the right hand placement on the mouse. In the "heat of battle", you need to be able to react quickly and know where all the controls are. I think with a little time spent with the FragFX and some more customization, I'll be able to achieve this. All in all, I think it was a worthwhile purchase for my needs. I'm more accurate with it, and with a little more in-use game time I think it'll become second nature.

I'm also going to try and get a short USB extension cable so that I'm not continually plugging in and out of the PS3 USB port itself. I'll just keep a short USB extension plugged into the PS3, and then plug the FragFX into that when needed.

hmm interesting, are you using a keyboard as well?

i am still searching around a little bit and nothing seems to come close to the FragFX.

I do have a Logitech wireless keyboard for the PS3, but I don't use that for gaming - just internet and messaging. I was doing just okay with the SixAxis controller, but my main problem with it was inadvertently melee'ing someone in CoD4 when I just meant to adjust my gun sight. This problem is definately fixed with the FragFX, and I've gained more accurate gun siting.
Now I just need to spend some time with it to master.

Glade to hear you thought it to be a worthwhile purchase...always hate to give good people bad advice
Adjusting the sensitivity of the buttons via the splitfish app is a must, makes all the difference and it will greatly increase the usability of the controller, IMO anyway.

It took me a few matches to get the feel of the FragFX responds but again once you become comfortable with its button layout and such and after adjustments are set to your liking, I think you'll find it to be a vast improvement....sounds as if you've already seen that in terms of accuracy.

But at least much better than giving bad people good advice.

I'd agree. I briefly tried the adjustments (before reading the FragFX PC manual) and set the bottom slider *all* the way down. I go into CoD4 and my gun starts firing non-stop until it reloads, and then starts all over again! LOL! I then read the manual
and note that with the bottom sliders all the way down, breathing on them will activate the button.
Live and learn...

Yeah, now it's just at a "get comfortable with" stage. Thanks for your input.

Got to spend a few more hours with the FragFX and CoD4 last night after doing some more tweaking with the button adjustment software. Definately liking it more than the SixAxis controller! My CoD4 FragFX settings are having the game sensitivity at 8, and the FragFX at 1-1/2 or 2. I'd be curious to hear what other CoD4 players have this set at.

Another question for other FragFX users - do you use the left half in the mouse pad holder, or do you just hold it in the left hand alone? I tried both, and I think it's easier to control in the holder. But I'm open for other tips or techniques with this as it's still new to me.
^^^Sorry it's me again.....although I'm sure there are plenty of others FragFX users who can chime in on this.

I experimented with different sensitivity levels as well, both through the game and on the left control stick...I guess you can say I found my "sleep number" to be betweem 9-10 in the game and 2-3 on the FragFX, for my tastes anyhow.

I actually only used the accompanying mouse pad for the first couple of weeks. My posture, when playing usually consist of me sitting on the couch or the floor in front of the couch and using a small end table for the mouse controls - for me it seems to be a more natural position and I get a little arm support also, which is always helpful.

Again for my tastes, I've found that I'm more comfortable using the left stick however....floating...free, outside of the cradle....whatever one would call it. Just my two cents.

No need to apologize, LOL.
I appreciate any input, and thanks again for yours.
