Hello All,

There have been a number of threads here lately about how to achieve sound isolation for a home theater. I've been getting more and more of these sorts of inquiries to my home theater acoustics company as well.

So today, I wrote a little Excel program which computes the overall Sound Transmission Class (STC) of a room. Individual STC numbers combine in a non-trivial mathematical way, and this calculator figures it out for you.

You simply specify the construction styles of walls, ceiling, doors, etc., along with their areas. You can also entering STCs of construction not listed. And there's built-in support to quantitatively model the effects of cracks or seams. It's quite amazing to see the dramatic drop in STC from openings of quite small area.

You can download this spreadsheet program from:

www.componentacoustics.com

click on "New! Sound Isolation Calculator"

It's free to all for non-commercial use. You must have Excel on your computer to run it.

Regards,

Terry
