Is there any freeware out there that does what I think CPUIdle does? I am looking for a way to lower the power consumption of my HTPC when I am not using it. I don't want to go so far as to have it enter Standby mode since it does do scheduled updates. I'm just looking for something that will reduce the CPU speed when nothing is running. Maybe something that reduces the FSB while the screensaver is active?


Anything out there?

Not sure about Win2k, but WinXP has some CPUIdle thing in it. However CPUIdle does not reduce CPU clock speed, it executes a halt instruction. IMHO apart from the CPU, HDs are also big power consumers, so you may try turning off HD if you want to save power. Unless you have a laptop, what's the point in saving power? You would be much better off with power savings if you take care of your house and heating appliances - they are the biggest power drainers. PC equals only 3 or 4 light bulbs in power, while water heater may be as high as 90.
