It is not cropped. It is completely reframed and most scenes have more information on the sides.

Upon what are you basing that? Is it being shown in HD syndication somewhere like Seinfeld, or are there screen shots/trailers available already?

Comedy Central did the whole series in the UK and now does themed episode days.

Most episodes are 100% HD and look like they were made yesterday, there are a few shots that are in SD however but are mostly seconds long a a few odd episodes

WB is really, really bad about episode cramming and low bitrates. Especially for their TV shows.

After posting the Friends Blu-ray press release we've had a few readers email us to double-check exactly what episodes would be on the set. The press release mentions "all 236 original broadcast episodes released for the first time in the US," but fans weren't sure whether these mean "as aired on TV," or the extended cuts that previously appeared on DVD.

We double-checked with Warner Home Video and confirmed that these are the NBC broadcast versions, not the extended episodes. The extended cuts were special versions created for the DVDs and no longer exist in a form that could be used for a Blu-ray release. The good news is that you'll have the original broadcast cuts in HD (on Blu-ray), and the extended cuts in SD (on DVD).

I certainly don't mind being correctED; especially when I'm wrong!

"Friends", even in '94 (too the best of my new found knowledge) was being shot 1.78:1.

My apologies.

I've seen some of "Friends" on HD cable (Comcastic tho) & it does look good.

As does "Seinfeld"; which was all so 1.78:1.

Really. A TV show had the prescience to shoot for a TV format that wouldn't be in wide use for more than a decade after it first aired (well, I suppose HDTV broadcasts predate mainstream HDTV adoption by quite a few years but certainly in 1993 16:9 wouldn't be anyone's primary consideration)? Source please.

This was common practice by Warner Brothers Television in 1994. ER, Babylon 5, and Friends all premiered that year and were safeguarded for a future 16:9 presentation. (Though B5 had post-production issues)

The HDTV (ATSC) standards were being drawn up as early as the late 1980s. By the early '90s, before Friends premiered, the 16x9 (1.78) aspect ratio had already been chosen.
