Frisco: Fuzzy picture using RCA indoor ant

480 Views 6 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  HDTVFanAtic
I have a Toshiba 30" hd widescreen tv with one rf connector in the back. I just recently bought an RCA indoor tv antenna and hooked it up today in my downtown San Francisco apartment (I live on the 3rd floor with a 3 large windows 8 feet away from it) To my disappointment, while I picked up 10 or so stations, their reception is fuzzy and pretty crappy. A couple of them come in pretty well but then there's lines over the picture. I tried messing with the gain, trying it without the gain, etc. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong, what can I do to make the picture better? I hate my tv right now :S Thanks in advance!

The "fuzz" and lines means you are tuning in the analog stations. Since you did not post the model number of your TV, we can only guess that you have an HD Ready model that does not have an ATSC tuner. Buy an OTA tuner and connect it to the APPROPRIATE antenna, you should be able to pick up your locals in HD.

thanks, do you know where I could buy one and how much they run for?
Again, what model Toshiba? As for an OTA tuner, anything under the Over The Air DTV/HDTV section in the link below would work. Plenty of posts about OTA ATSC tuners you can search through here also.

First post the model number of your Toshiba TV here so we can check whether it has an ATSC (digital) tuner or not. If you brought your 30" TV recently, it should have a ATSC tuner as all TVs > 25" sold were required to have ATSC tuners by the FCC (if they are to be called a TV) as of July 1, 2006. Check your manual to see if there is a menu choice to select NTSC (analog) or ATSC (digital) tuners. You should also check the San Francisco thread in the Locals forum to determine whether there are any locals broadcasting their digital signal on a VHF channel or whether they are all UHF.
Topic title changed to make specific.

Actually, it was sets MANUFACTURED after June 30th, not sets sold....which makes a major difference.
