From UM18s to HS-24s

Originally I built this theater with four corner loaded UM18 full marties tuned to 16Hz, and a verity of nearfield drivers. Single UM18 full marty 16Hz, three UM18s sealed, quad SP-1804 sealed. However, after building a 20ft^3 HS-24 for the living room, then putting it in the theater just to see what it was like, I was ruined. So I sold all my 18's and ordered two more 24s. All three will be in 12ft^3 sealed cabinets. One nearfield, the other two corner loaded on the back wall. Eventually, I will replace the two back wall cabinets with a pair of 20ft^3 tuned to 17Hz. Today I cut the baffle off the first cabinet, gutted it and installed new bracing. Tomorrow I'll try to get the second finished before the game. The first three pics are the UMs.

No doubt! I probably have THE WORST woodworking skills on this entire forum lol

I hate doing these kind of builds. When it comes time to make the angle cuts, I just stand and stare at the wood, like it's going to cut itself ...it never does.

The single digits should raise a fair bit with the sealed 24's.
Obviously they won't be as aggressive between 13-30hz as ported 24's would be...

The first thing that caught my eye was the Avatar map center pic. I didn't even see the subs at first since they were painted to match the back wall.

If you're familiar with the Avatar series, look at the back of the room. It's shaped like the temple in the capital city of whatever country that series takes place in. I don't remember the name of it. But that's why it's painted that color.

Yes...... this is awesome!! These things really do ruin whatever expectations you had of what subwoofers can do. It's just insane.

I got my other 2 finished and hooked up btw... :D This is finally what I have been wanting!! I need to tune things and configure the miniDSP, but very impressive so far. Also need to adjust my gain on the UMIK-1. I can't get higher readings as it clips and will stop the test

Congratulations! I'll keep watching your thread for the REW graphs, hopefully you'll be flat to single digits.

Nick should be finishing up mine this week, and hopefully they will be here the 28th, at least that's the plan. One cabinet is ready for sanding, the other just needs the baffle glued on. The plan is to have both cabinets finished and back in the theater this weekend.

Sweet! You don't waste any time my friend... I'll get some measurements taken at some point. Need to reorganize my rack first and do the edit for my build/demo video. Then I'll do a video on REW response and some more demos. Looking forward to your finished product as well!

Soon as the paint dries, I'll install the binding posts and poly-fill. The HS-24s should be here Friday.

Nice!! Those look excellent man! You have amps to power the other 2? You are gonna love it man. I'm still amazed at how these 3 sound. I'm planning on getting them tuned it a bit more on Tuesday when I'm off work and get a build/demo video out sometime after. Nick got those 24s to you quick! Which is a good thing, cause you build fast haha

The two that Nick just finished are dual 1 ohm coils. They will be on an NU12000. That amp will make about 4k watts x2 with a 2 ohm load. The nearfield 24 is a dual 2 ohm and will be on an XLS2502. Tag me when you post the link to your video, I don't get on youtube much.

Finally finished the cabinet modifications this weekend. I really haven't had a chance to do any real testing, just played a few go to bass songs and a little work in REW. They make you feel like bugs are crawling all over your skin.

A friend of mine had a pair being finished up when I ordered mine. When Nick found out all four would be going to the same place he rushed mine out and delivered them himself. The build time was only 17 days! I'll be starting the build on his two in a couple weeks. I think that will be 7 HS-24 builds in under three months, with 4 LaVoce 21 builds sprinkled in to keep me busy.

There’s gotta be a feeling that is jealousy on steroids cause that’s what I’m feeling.

Looks awesome!

Those look freaking awesome! You have one nearfield as well? I knew you made the large ported enclosure a few months back, but that didn't look like that one... I'm sure that's intense if so! Definitely post more sweeps once you get a chance, I'm interested in what sort of spl you're getting in that room. It's much smaller than my open basement theater and I was peaking in the low 120s

Edit: just read your first post about nearfield. Did you use the same box you made with the black marbled top?
