Frustrating Elite HDCP problem

20463 Views 17 Replies 14 Participants Last post by  jpjibberjabber
I connected my Xbox Elite to my Optoma EP719, HDCP compliant projector with a 5meter hdmi to dvi cable and was unable to watch any movies on the elite or the hd-dvd add on. I would get a "Secure HDCP link not found" error message. So I went and bought a 15ft hdmi cable and an hdmi to dvi adapter and hooked it up and I was then able to watch regular and hd-dvd's that night. The next night I put in a dvd and once again I cannot watch any dvds. I get the same HDCP error message. I try turning off and on the elite and the projector, and pulling out and reconnecting the cable but nothing works. What the heck could be going on here!!! Someone please help.

this is the beginning of the problems with HDCP I f-in hate it

and cant wait until someone comes out with a box that will strip it off for you I would pay atleast $1000 for that

I am not a pirate but I want my stuff in full res through any connection that can handle it
The cable may be losing signal with a cable that long. Try a shorter cable to see if the problem goes away.
I don't think that the cable distance would affect the HDCP problem. An HDMI cable should not have any signal loss up to 50 ft. I would check and make sure that the adapter you bought says its HDCP approved.
Thanks for the responses, but;

1. a shorter cable is not practical, the projector is ceiling mounted and has to be atleast 15ft. long.

2. I don't see any specs on any of the dvi-hdmi adapters that say they are HDCP compliant or not.

How is it that I can view HD video (1080i) from my Dishnetwork Vip622 receiver using either hdmi cable I now have and I can view games and non copy protected videos(like Halo 3 commercial, Game videos, etc) from the Xbox 360 but I put in a dvd (sd or hd) or rent a movie on xbox live and I'm not allowed to view it. This is insane.

Just to let you know, here are some things the MS techs told me when I called;

You can't play any copy protected DVD's on an xbox 360

Why don't you try playing an HD-DVD in the Xbox 360 console drive to see if that will work.

You can't use the HD-DVD player with the HDMI connection, you'll just have to switch to vga or component cables when you want to watch movies.

I swear, they wouldn't know what an HDMI cable was even if I strangled them with one.

The DISH ViP622 does use HDCP (for at least the HD channels that I receive). SJ

Is this true? If a person has an elite and an HD DVD player they cannot play HD DVD's using the HDMI connection on the xbox to the TV?

If true it doesn't sound logical and I'll have to cancel my order for the Elite.
I have my Elite connected via HDMI running 1080P (with the attached HD DVD player). Have watched HD DVDs in 1080P... SJ
Ahhh, once again, who were the ones crying for HDMI and all its glorious drm wonders?
if you dont already know monoprice.com has great deals maybe get a good cable I dont know

but HDCP sucks on a side note there is no reason why the 360 cant upscale dvd's via component for non-copyrited movies but it cant even do that

anywat I have noticed since the 360 cant do PCM out I have LipAync problems with HD-DVD's since the 360 has to decrypt and process sound just a bad idea or atleast give us a audio delay feature

Thanks for the confirmation.
I had the same issue. I was using the HDMI cable which came with the xbox 360 Elite and got the HDCP error when trying to play HD DVD's thru the hddvd add-on.

I replaced the xbox hdmi cable to a monster hdmi cable and this fixed the problem. I have no HDCP issues anymore.
I was having this problem and I was able to fix it by turning on the xbox, waiting until the screen showed the logo and the error message "secure hdcp link not found" then unplugging the hdmi cable from the back of the xbox and plugging it back in. It seemed to be able to handshake correctly after that. Also, for a time after that I was getting no sound, but when I went into the dashboard and changed the display settings from 720p to 480p and back again, I got sound. Hopefully this helps somebody.
Hi Guys, i had the exact same HDCP problem except that my Elite had been running DVD's fine for nearly a year. After looking around a lot i found a rather simple solution. Just unplug the device (TV, Projector etc) that your xbox is plugged into for 30 seconds or more, then put it back in. After doing this DVD's etc work fine. I hope this works for you guys.
you do have 1080p selected in the display blade right? not trying to be a dink just making sure.

Seriously, he just replaced a dental floss HDMI with a well-built one. He gets an image. Shocking!
