Looks like this'll be a first... hopefully other FSN affiliates around the nation will take the hint and join in with their high school championship games.

FSN expands 'High School Football' schedule

FSN Pittsburgh received such a welcome response from televising weekly high school football games that it is expanding "McDonald's High School Football" to include the WPIAL playoffs.

The network announced Thursday a 10-game regular-season schedule, along with plans to show three WPIAL playoff games and the four WPIAL championship games Nov. 24 at Heinz Field.

"We're very excited about the playoffs," FSN executive producer Paul Kosuth said. "It was tough last year because we built a nice rhythm, then had to stop and wait three weeks for the championship. It will be great to carry all the way through this year."

The WPIAL finals will be the first high school football games to be televised in High Definition.

"We're truly excited about that," Kosuth said. "The HD doubles the quality of the picture you see at home. Even if you're watching at home on standard definition, the quality will jump out at you because the cameras are so much better. They produce incredible pictures. Heinz Field will look wonderful in HD."

FSN's season begins with a Saturday doubleheader at Gateway on Sept. 2, with Pittsburgh Central Catholic playing Gateway and Greensburg Central Catholic against East Allegheny. The second game, Bishop Canevin at Serra Catholic, also will be played on a Saturday to avoid conflicting with the Steelers' regular-season opener on Thursday, Sept. 7.

The rest of FSN's regular-season schedule will be played on Thursdays. The participating schools include defending PIAA champions McKeesport and South Park, along with 2005 WPIAL Class AAA runners-up Thomas Jefferson.

"We're pleased the way the schools cooperated with us this year," Kosuth said. "When I called and talked to (athletic directors) and coaches, more were open to moving a game to Thursday after they saw what we did last year.

"It's all about the kids -- the bands, the cheerleaders and the kids on the field -- and I thought we did a great job capturing that last year. What was so enjoyable was to see all the different communities and see the response from the fans and the kids. It's all part of capturing the high school experience."

has FSN ever broadcast a nationwide game in HD yet (like acc basketball on sunday)? do they even have the capacity to? all i've seen on my local FSN are regional games.
shame that like 10 people actually get FSN-Pittsburgh HD
Actually, It is not a first. The Portland, Oregon based local sports channel that was started by Paul Allen (Owner of the Trailblazers) had many high school and local small college events. The channel was all HD. It folded when the Portland cable system refused to put in in their basic tier. I forget what the name of the channel was.

Also, INHD does some HD sports.
I know INHD shows high school basketball, but I think that's it for high school sports.
The local PBS station here in Nebraska has broadcast high school football games in HD as well.
This would be really cool to see since I graduated from Gateway and would enjoy seeing them in HD. Unfortunately Dish will probably never carry FSN Pittsburgh HD so I may just go to the game since I live close to the School.
