LOL of course it doesn't look like a 2005 movie DUH it's 20 years old. In any case that could be the best transfert this film will ever have..
I really like the reviews on that site as well, but every one I've read has had typo errors.
I wonder how it compares to the broadcast versions... I most likely will not be getting this, not really based on the review, but because I already have a serviceable HD copy.

It does seem that they are rushed out there, but perhaps he wants to remain the TOP TIER for HD-DVD and Blu-Ray... Can't blame a guy for wanting to rush traffic! :D
Btu waht good si a revue relly wen it hsa tipos everhwere? kinda hra dto take it's serously.

In all seriousness, I can't wait to get this and retire my d-vhs copy.
"My biggest problems are the softness of the image and the wonky fleshtones. I don't know what Kubrick intended, so I'm only guessing here, but how come in some scenes everyone looks rather reddish, like a pig?"

It almost makes me wonder if the compressionist miscalibrated his monitor or something...

I have noticed that by the way... All my TV shows for broadcast HD look fine, but the demo HD channel from my cable provider (Rogers) looks "rather reddish, like a pig". It's really, really irritating. (My set was ISF calibrated and I get the same results on other sets, so I don't think it's my settings.)

The master used for both the standard DVD release and this new HD-DVD version appears to be the same, and it is weak, lacking the three-dimensional appearance that marks the best high-def.
Someone forgot to mention to this nitwit that the SD DVD was full-frame and the HD DVD is widescreen.

Or whether the reviewer has calibrated his monitor to his player.....
I bought the following movies in HD:

Apollo 13

The Last Samurai

Serenity

Swordfish

Doom

Jarhead

There was a review up on Home Theater Forum last night as well.

They have Unforgiven up as well.
I've been reading his comments on picture quality on various HD-DVDs - saying each and every HD-DVD is better than the DVD, and comments like "thanks no doubt to HD-DVD expanded colorspace". what?
That's one of the difficulties of reviewing a new format. Virtually everything is going to look better than the SD-DVD, but we don't have a big enough sample size to start making comparisons between various HD-DVDs, and we really haven't developed a reviewing vernacular to describe what differences we're seeing. That'll come in time. Some things that I have noticed when I'm being very critical are jaggies that shouldn't be present (DOOM), edge enhancement (APOLLO 13 in a few scenes, RUMOR HAS IT in many scenes) and somewhat iffy grain rendering in spots (TLS). As we get more things to compare, there will be more things to notice and point out in reviews, but it's a little overwhelming fresh out of the gate without a good solid frame of reference.

I'm very glad I left lots of room for improvement in my initial reviews, because TRAINING DAY makes all the ones I've seen before look sad by comparison. And who knows where it can go up from there?

Mark, what screen have you got - resolution? contrast ratio? HDMI or component?
Toshiba 65H80 RPTV, 1080i native, via component.
I am still hearing this is coming on the 16th...

Full Metal Jacket and Unforgiven were officially announced a couple days ago as being released next Tuesday.

Neflix has moved those HDDVD's to my active queue from my saved list: "Releases on HD May 16, 2006"
Hey there --

Well, I'm the "nitwit" that writes those reviews for High Def Digest, eh eh.

So I'll gladly take the nice compliments here, and just ignore the bad ones.

No, seriously -- regarding the Full Metal Jacket review, I conducted an interview with Kubrick's DVD producer back when the Warner Kubrick remasters were reissued back in 2002.

He explained that one master print was made, and all versions minted from that. So both the 1.78:1 HD master and the 4:3 HD master that the full frame standard DVD release were downconverted from are taken from the same source material. So the point was just to illustrate that this new HD-DVD release has not been remastered in terms of its source material over the previous DVD.

As for typos, we spell check every review, but perhaps some have slipped through. Feel free to point them out and we'll gladly fix any errors, or just email us at [email protected] .

We want to make the best site we can for HD fans, so feel free to send us any constructive criticism -- we're happy to receive it.

Best,

Peter
