Built a pair of the Fusion-8s. Also ordered the matching center, but will not be building that until I replace our old LED DLP TV to make room for it.

I guess this is a rather abnormal build for me - I didn't modify anything! ;) Well, almost nothing, I'll get to that a little later. On with the pics!

Pile 'o parts:

Tackled the crossovers first. Got the PCBs from @mtg90 (thanks again Matt!):

Have a local Rockler Woodworking store, so off to get the Baltic Birch. All panels for the L/R cut and ready for assembly:

Dry fit to double-check. I'm veneering these, so I built the boxes ~1/16" smaller than the baffle. This will work:

Off we go!

Boxes complete, crossovers mounted, putting the baffles on. Embarrassed to say, I do not have enough clamps...

Couldn't wait to get a listen. These put out an amazing amount of bass in this location:

Back into the shop for veneer:

All veneered and sanded. And this is what you want those seams to look like. Right! No seam! :)

Stained. Minwax Early American, seems to be my go-to color:

Second coat of poly applied. Getting there...

So here's the modification I made. I didn't care for the gloss on the waveguides, so I did a light spray of flat black from a rattle can, let that dry for a couple of days, then wiped them down with a soft cloth (not pictured here). Ended up with more of a matte finish, if I don't like how they came out I can bead blast them later.

Duratex on the front baffle and we're all set. Next time I think I'm going to attempt to spray the Duratex, it is very difficult to get even coverage on the baffle as there is not much flat surface. Final pics:

A big "Thank You!" to @Erich H for his commitment to the DIY crowd!

Looks really good! Do you like the contrast of the green hemp woofer? I recall seeing a post that someone used a light stain to turn the woofers black. Great job with the WG too. All the workmanship looks very clean. Are you going to do the same treatment for the center or will it be hidden away?

Thanks!

Yes, the woofers definitely have a green tint. I haven't seen them in position in good light yet, but when I do and if I then feel they are too distracting I plan to use some Rit dye on them to blacken them up.

Center will be the same. Bonus there is that the baffle for the center has squared edges, so I can build the box the same size as the baffle, veneer up to the front face and round over that edge with a 1/2" radius router bit. Much easier than trying to get the veneer butted up perfectly to the baffle. My 1/2" bit is not the same profile as the CNC roundover, so I couldn't use that method on the L/R.

Nice job! Welcome to the Fusion8 club!
Many thanks! Happy to be a member.

I knew I would not be disappointed with them. I am, however, very surprised by the bass response. I am running them full range right now, watching some clips from WoW, Interstellar, etc. without subs. Very impressive, and I only have about 4 hours on them.

A colleague at work is looking for something with good full range response for both music and movies. Going to have him over for a listen, good chance I'll be building another set of these with him after that!

Those turned out great! Is that cherry veneer?I love the waveguide ,I was never a fan of the gloss finish.
I want to spray my baffles with Duratex.I need to figure out an inexpensive way to do that.

Nothing that exotic ;). It's inexpensive birch veneer from Menards - https://www.menards.com/main/kitchen/cabinet-organization-accessories/veneer-edge-banding/36-x-96-paper-backing-white-birch-wood-veneer-sheet/033696rs/p-1466525695098.htm

I have an inexpensive spray gun, similar to https://www.harborfreight.com/air-tools/paint/industrial-paint-spray-gun-43760.html. I'll have to give that a try on some test pieces when the weather improves.

Looks good.I wish we had Menards where I live.
Thanks for the link to the sprayer.I'll give one a "shot".

Beautiful! I'm about to order a pair of these. I hope I can make then that nice and that I'll enjoy them in my large living room. Right now I have a pair of Polk r-50's. I'm sure they have to at least be quite an upgrade over my current situation lol.

I had some time this weekend so I decided to cut up the panels for the Fusion-8 center. And in my typical fashion I couldn't stop there. I typically wait to post until I have finished the build, but I figured I already posted the L/R builds, so what the heck...

All the panels and bracing ready. Why stop there?

Terminal cup hole drilled, may as well start gluing it up...

Well, there's still time left before my buddy arrives (we made plans to get to the local brewery), so we'll just glue up the bracing. And the other side. And caulk some seams.

And after enjoying some beers (this is always a good idea ) may as well assemble the top and baffle, right? Note I forgot to line the cab with mattress topper before applying the baffle, oops. Might have been the beer...

So, since the box was complete, may as well veneer it the following morning (I did line it with mattress topper before veneering, so Yay! But what a PITA with the baffle in the way)...

And what the heck, sand, file, more sanding...

Got home tonight after work and rounded over the front edges. It became readily apparent that I would struggle using the big router on the face like I had planned with all the gaps for the drivers (I only have a 1/2" shank 1/2" roundover bit, pity), so I went around on the top, sides and bottom instead. That left a lot of hand sanding at the corners and imperfect roundovers, but the Duratex should hide the majority of the issues. Applied stain, will hit it with the poly tomorrow after work.

I believe it was one of your posts that put that idea in my head.

I see you have the purple cone variety. The green cones, at least in my room, don't seem nearly as light. We'll see how they look when there's a decent amount of light on them in the summer, but they are facing northeast so that probably won't be an issue. Not much light gets to them in their spots.

But I will be using the Rit dye method if they become an issue!

Just built there fusion 8 center and the cinema 8s. I think the green is very dark and actually I don't mind it. The light isn't great in my room anyway so ain't nobody but me gonna notice. If the fusion 8s would have been available when I ordered probably would have chosen those over the volt 8s.

Ditto. In the room where I have the L/R I don't even notice the green, don't expect those to be a problem. Where I am placing the center is a different story and I may have to darken them up, but we'll see.

Nothing new on the center build tonight, just put the first coat of poly on it. More pictures coming in the next few days.

WOW! The veneer and duratex look so good together! Thanks for sharing.
No problem. Not an original thought in my head however ;), I simply copied what others have already done for the finish. I am pleased with the look though!

pleased with the look . . very sweet, tight and right

Question. What is your listening distance?

which relates to me wondering about how much better / worse , if more than negligible, will the EOS horns soundfield be compared to the SEOS?

My HTM6's at7.4 ft. as L/R and moderate toein are stellar.

but your room is not my room,

just curious of you consideration 'bout that

I'm curious about that myself actually. My constraints were in height rather than width, would have loved to buy a wide horizontal center with the 10" or 12" SEOS waveguide and 6" or 8" drivers but alas, that doesn't exist (that I have seen). And depending on how wide it was, it may have been a problem with proximity to the HTM-10s.

Listening to music on the Fusion L/R gives me the impression that dispersion from the EOS is narrower, but I can't tell how much narrower than the SEOS in the HTM-10s as they are in different rooms - The Fusions being in the least-optimal setting. One of these days when I have the place to myself I want to compare them in the same room, but as neither of our setups are in dedicated spaces I have to fit what I can into the space that presents itself.

Much like art, I don't know much about the design/science behind it/makeup, but I know what I like. And so far I am really happy with all of the DIYSG speakers I've built. Expecting the same reaction once I get this Fusion center in place, really looking forward to how it sounds. And BTW, it's replacing a modified Volt-6 center... :)

ETA: Sorry, I didn't address your original question. MLP is ~11' from center speaker. But this is our living room and we have various positions, across the span of the wall. Definitely not ideal.
