Fusion/MyHD cohabitation

529 Views 14 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  Socio
Hi all,

I'm new around here, and I've tried several searches to find the info I need, but so far, nothing I've dug up has worked.

I'm trying to get a PC with both a Fusion III card, and a MDP-120 to work with a (I know, old) Panasonic CT34WDM60 HD Monitor (Component inputs, no DVI).

PC has an ATI 9800 Pro graphics card in it, and runs WinXP Pro.

I'm using a RCA VHDC300 HDTV VGA/Component transcoder (orignally made for the DTC100 STB)

I'm using the VGA loop cable to connect ATI card to MDP-120, to transcoder, to monitor.

With the help of posts here about powerstrip, I've been able to get the Win desktop to display at 1920x1080i, though it first comes up progressive (when windows boots) until powerstrip starts. Usually this results in a screwed up display (the panny really hates sync changes on the fly, it seems), until I deselect/reselect the input on the monitor. If I have to, I can live with this problem.

The other problem I have, is that while I can get the desktop centered on the monitor, and the Fusion card looks fine in full screen mode, the MDP-120 image is shifted (a lot) to the left when I go into HD mode, giving a large black bar on the right side of the monitor. (May be chopping picture on the left too, I'm not entirely sure.)

How do I control the settings of the MDP-120 overlay? It's obviously using different parameters than the desktop is, which is causing this shift.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

There is no way to adjust the MDP image... so you may want to get its picture centered correctly (using controls on your display... which may mean accessing some hidden menu) and THEN adjust your desktop so that it is also displaying correctly
Aw geez. This is really bad news.

I can only adjust the H-pos on the monitor through the service menu, and if I do that, all my other (stb) 1080i sources are going to be shifted to the right.

I'm a bit suspicious of the RCA transcoder. I seem to recall the DTC-100 put out some non-standard timing, so I wonder if it's trying to compensate for a non-existent (in my equipment) right-shift. (I thought the adjust on it would allow me to correct any such goofiness, but maybe not completely.)

Maybe I should try a key digital or audio authority transcoder before giving in to despair.

Do you think that would have an effect?

I don't know of a universal solution... Some monitors (like my projector) have independant settings by input, others have only one setting by resolution which is going to be a pain.

The ATI dongle combined with the MyHD card in the YPrPb color space could provide another alternative...

Yup, settings by resolution, that's this one.

I've tried the ATI DVI dongle, which worked ok with the Fusion III and ATI desktop (no alignment issue other than some overscan) but that doesn't work with the DVI daughtercard. (DVI-I vs DVI-D, so no analog on the MyHD DVI connection).

So (guessing) the ATI DVI dongle probably just mates up the DVI-I analog pins to the component inputs, which makes sense, since you have to set it to Y/Pr/Pb in the control panel.

Hmmm. So I can see how using the VGA dongle might work. I wonder if I can find one locally...

Thanks again...

Eiffel, do you know if the VGA dongle will work correctly with the 9800 Pro? The ATI website calls it out for the 8500 and AIW 9600.

I believe there are two dongles... and one of them should work with your card (the same one that is said to work with my 9600).

I have no experience with dongles, as I am fortunate to live in the RGBHV/RGBs colorspace ;)

nutz4hd: Scansetup may be able to correct your MyHD image shift.

I stand corrected, I didn't know about this utility!

Arrrrgh. Looks like I'll find out. The VGA version of the ATI dongle arrived today.

Unfortunately, it _doesn't_ work on the 9800

They want you to use the DVI dongle, which then has no way to hook up to the MyHD card.

So it looks like I'll have to use a transcoder after all.

I'll just be over there (points) thudding my head into the floor for awhile....

Just nutz.

Well, so much for that.

The Key Digital transcoder arrive, and when I setup my desktop to 1080i with PS, Fusion works like a champ. had a sync issue, until I flipped a switch that's supposed to be a compatibility fix for Panny CRT monitor and the RCA settop box, but it centers/syncs my desktop right up.

However, when the MDP-120 brings up its overlay, it's got some kind of sync issues. It wobbles, I see a video "echo" effect, and sometimes it looks like the scanlnes are starting in the middle of the screen, and wrapping all the way around, leaving a black bar in the middle of the screen. It seems a bit content dependent. Sometimes I even have a clear crisp picture.

With the ATI VGA dongle, and the MDP switched to y/Pr/Pb, it syncs great, but of course I can't see the funsion display or desktop. (thud, thud, thud ... )

Looked around for info on ScanSetup.exe, to see if that would help, and I found nothing. Why would you want over _and_ underscan for the same side?

Willing to try other experiments, if anyone has any ideas.

Send the Key Digital back.

PM pj3 here at AVS.

Suppoesdly he has the best transcoders

for the money.
I bought the "AVS Transcoder" described in the link below and have been very happy with it connected to my MyHD card and Radeon 9600 via loopback.

For closure's sake, I thought I'd post my solution here, just in case it makes it a bit easier for the next foo^h^h^hperson that tries this.

I finally broke out my soldering iron, and made a couple of cables, one from 3 male RCA connectors to a female VGA connector, and one from a male VGA to 3 female RCA connectors, so I'm now wired thusly:

9800 XT DVI--> ATI DVI Dongle -->3 Male RCA->female VGA --> MyHD Cable in from Graphics card->MyHD Cable out to TV --> male VGA->3 Female RCA --> Standard Component cable to TV.

It's ugly, but with the ATI card putting out Y/Pr/Pb because of the dongle, and the MyHD cards set to put out Y/Pr/Pb in HD mode, it does indeed work.

Thanks for all the suggestions, it's always good to have moral support.

I know it is a little late but;

Try going to your ATI control panel in the display properties, the hit the display tab and then click on the word "Monitor", the monitor properties will pop up, hit the adjustments tab and see if you can adjust your monitor screen that way.
