Future prices for Plasma displays?

My wife and I went shopping for a new display this weekend. We ended up purchasing a RP set for our family room, but I have a question on plasma prices based on what we encountered.

Without naming brands, stores, or specific prices - It looks like 42" plasma displays can be found at a street price of around $1500, and 50" plasma displays can be found with a street price of around $2700. Both of these prices are for would I would consider to be "off-brand" names.

My sweet spot would be for a name-brand 50" plasma with a street price of $2000, but obviously we aren't there yet.

Can anybody point me to a good post or website that discusses plasma price trends? When can we expect to see an off-brand 50" plasma for

i agree. I think my next set will be a plasma at a great price. As far as 50" for 2 grand, i dont know if it will ever get there and if it does i dont think i can wait that many years. I think with the way things are going annually with price drops, when the 1080p plasmas hit stores, as long as they arent overpriced, we could see a substantial deduction in prices of pdp's. Say a 42" name brand for 1500 and a 50" name brand for 2500. but that is a generous deduction. I am really weary of purchasing a 42" due to its current res 1024x768. I have a 32" aquos with 1366x768 and i think i've spoiled myself with crammed resolution and i do see the difference in stores with identifying pixels from a moderate distance. One thing that gets me with pdp's, pioneer in general, is their prices. Pioneer offers a 60" plasma for 9500 and its not even 1080p. Why is pioneer so stiff on the prices. I know they make really good panels but no one is that good. I could get a car for the prices their asking. 3500 for their 43" pdp? i dont think so.

Remember that at one time off brands include Honda (cars and motocycles), Toyota, Samsung, LG (once known as Goldstar) and many others. The brands now that are considerd "lower tier" like Westinghouse, RCA, Zenith, Sylvania, Phillips, at one time ruled the electronics world.
Interesting - based on a few links it looks like Matsushita (Panasonic) is forecasting 50" plasma displays with a street price of around $2150 in early 2007.
With the soon to be introduced 1080p plasmas it will be interesting to see how the 720p displays are marketed. Will they continue to evolve or will the 1080p sets get all the future technological attention? It seems that in the RPTV market the death of 720p in in the near future.

Most the old GREATS, dont exist anymore, or dont effectively exist. They just have high name recognition and sell the rights to the name to offbrands. Like Westinghouse, do you think thats the same company that built the electrical networks of the world? Doubt it.

And yea maybe Sony will be an off brand in the future too, but he doesnt want a plasma in 40 years haha.
With all the contract manufacturing and partnering going on in the electronics industry it is pretty hard to call *anybody* "top-tier" anymore. The partnerships change with the wind - and the contract mfg of yesterday is the name brand of today. I don't think Sony ever made their own plasma panels, yet most people would have considered them a "tier 1" mfr.

You are correct. There is no relation. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Westinghouse

IMO a good 42" plasma such as Panasonic, Hitachi, or Toshiba beats any RP, regardless of size, for the same price.
Most of these companies get their parts from the same manufacturer in a foriegn country so to put one company down you would have to put all the companies that get the same exact part from the same exact manufacturer down.
