[Post modified the gain from 1.3 to 1.4 as after further testing with Stewart screen materials, it would seem my gain is closer to 1.4. Please ignore the 1.3 in the subject line!]

I recently tested my homemade painted screen made from curtain blackout material using samples from DaLite & Stewart.

Seems my screen is around 1.4 gain. It's brighter then the 1.3 samples, and less bright then the 1.5's. I put it pretty much bang-on in the middle.

Paint used: BEHR Ultrawhite, eggshell finish.

For building the screen, I followed MrWigggles instructions at this URL: http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/Forum9/HTML/000483.html

I substituted white tile board for curtain blackout material.

Just thought you guys would like to know! I'm very happy with the results... but never quite knew what the gain was!

When I visited Don Stewart, we measured the gain of the white side of a Kodak Gray card. Its calibrated at 90% reflectance and measured out to about a gain of 1.1. The 18% side measured as about .22.

The moral of the story is that one should not confuse a gain of 1.0 with 100% reflectance. Its more like 85% reflectance. A good flat white paint may come in at 95% or higher reflectance.
