G70 is in da House!

Hello Folks,

I'll try to keep this short but my g70 arrived today and it's currently in the basement in an improptu setup.

I bought a roasted G70 with the plan to re-tube it and have a zero hour G70. The price was nice even for me (my HT budget is not unlimited.)

It showed up today pretty much just as described. One top panel was damaged and I may try to seek some damages from the shipper but .. I paid a very low price for shipping so I guess it doesn't really matter.

The pj is uber-clean. Looks like a car that just got detailed. It's spooky. I tell myself it comes from some permanent installation where it was driven hard and long and thus the toasted tubes yet clean chassis. Whatever the real reason it's very, very clean inside and out.

After a time to aclimate or whatever that's called.. it fired right up and it's very sharp. Again, for the amount of wear it's so sharp it's amazing. The blue and green tubes have even 4:3 wear that's pretty significant but the pj's picture is nice anyhow.

After I figure out how to check the hours, I will but there was a sticker inside with the serial number and the designation 10,000+ Hours. I also want to figure out my firmware and stuff so I'll be seeking that next.

The date of manufacture was spotted as March 1998.

Thanks and Good Luck,

=B

Congrats, I got one for a steal also with spent green and blue. I have a 9500 that I am going to hang but am sorta thinking about getting this one retubed. Maybe we could get some kind of package deal on some rebuilds. If you can swing it with VDC I am game.

EJ
How much are CRTs for that projector? Congrats. I was thinking of picking one up as well, but it was not worth the hassle of switching out the 1208/2 and selling it.
I think currently the green is $750 and the red and blue are $900. I'm seriously thinking about just getting new ones if they are available when I can afford it. Till then the Marquee 8500 will have to do.

p.s I think new glass re-builds are $500. (For the G70 that is.)
I bought my NEC PG+ and when I opened it up, it too looked like it had just rolled out of a seriously clean factory production line, it was as you say 'spookily' clean. It came from a school, (You can see the school logo on the green tube!) so no ciggy smoke maybe, but whatever the reason, the inside of the thing was immaculate.

Brian, expect to pay a tad over $1000 each for the R and B assembly total with shipping if you're buying directly from Sony. They're $952 base. $750 base is correct for the G.

Enjoy, it's a great machine. I have a new B/G in G70 and it's picture is beautiful.

Agreed that the interior of these projectors was eerily clean... I was surprised to find the better of the two that I bought had 4824 hours. Attached are pics of the tubes. Just perceptible is a bit of 4:3 wear on G, the others looked spotless. It also has a n EXB-DS10 line doubler board installed and he threw in a nice Chief mount.

I couldn't be happier about the pj's. Wish ****e at the office would let up a bit so I could find some quality time to fool with the new machines...

This is the roasted guy. Red C element is melted but tube looks good. Other tubes are pretty far gone. Hour meter shows 8629 on the clock.

BTW, to get to the hour meter, try: [enter][enter][UP][DOWN][enter], then select yes to enter service menu. Use the Menu key, then go down to "Set Info", then go Right for "CRT Timer" and press enter.

The firmware is on the set info screen. Mine look like this:

Serial Number 2001462 (4824 Hours): M = 1.11, S1 = 1.11, S2 = 1.10, S3 = 1.00

Serial Number 2001562 (8629 Hours): M = 1.11, S1 = 1.12, S2 = 1.10, S3 = 1.00

Dates are from March and July 1998. The Serial Numbers are only 100 apart! that's kinda creepy...
How many of these things did Sony Make anyway?

Congrats on the G70. They're great machines. I've had mine for over 5 years and have put 4k hours on it. A while ago I thought my red tube was toast, the raster would stay lit. VDC gave me a quote of $645 for a new bare red tube.
My tubes look exactly, really exactly, like the ones in the post almost just above this one. But, I don't think I have the C-Element problem.

They must have had the same source and use because the wear is precise-ly the same.

p.s. Serial n 2001438
I wonder if we (on this board) will hear from the person who bought the remaining on from my lot (with the error code) for $250.

Ok, I got the info I wanted...

Serial Number 2001438 (10815 Hours): M = 1.11, S1 = 1.11, S2 = 1.10, S3 = 1.00

Looks like I have the old firmware in which you can adjust G2 and turn of AKB so that's nice!

You should see how fricking clean AMPROs are. Exactly like they have never been used.

wonder why?????
congrats
Thanks.

It's the realization of a dream for me.

And the deal was good enough for me to worry that it was totally bogus so it's nice that it ended well.

How many VDC new glass rebuilds do we have to buy to get a volume discount?

Count me in at $900 for Blue and Green.

How about $1300 for all three.

VDC hint, hint , nudge, nudge :D .

Congrats on your new (used) G70! Sounds like you were lucky on the price, AND shipping/handling, for the most part.

I'm interested in reading more about your switch from an 8500 to a G70 (I've got an 8500 myself).

Have fun!
