Games running in 4.1 on a Home Theater

Hi everyone.

I heard that when you connect your sound card to a preamp (using SPDIF), only games that support Dolby Digital 5.1 play in surround mode. Others just play in stereo.

Is there a way to have the sound card output decoded signals to the preamp instead while also keeping the spdif cable connected in case one wanted the preamp to decode movie audio signals externally?

If you're just wanting to run 4 speaker surround, that shouldn't be a problem, unless you're sound card is using the L/R surround output line as the SPDIF out, too. Even then, some cards would let you use the SPDIF out as your rear speaker signal which I believe you could run with an analog out for the front channels. Another option would be to just run stereo out via your SPDIF line for the games, and get your preamp to do DPLII on them. If you can force Dolbly Surround output from your sound card, this works even better. Still not the same as intentional discrete channels, but still very pleasant.

The plugs on the soundcard are as you know the same kind that headphones plug into (don't know what that standard is called). Do cables of that kind plug into a preamp in the first place?!?!? If not, is there a way to convert them to something compatible?!

The spdif plug on my sound card is also the center/subwoofer plug that is used to output decoded signal for those two channels.

For 4.1 games (using EAX, Aural3D, or anything other than Dolby 5.1), connecting the forward and backward channels from the sound card to the preamp would probably suffice, but how can that be done?
So any new thoughts guys? :(
Go to Radio Shack and pick up a couple minijack (that's what's on the card are) to stereo RCA (those are the bigger single pin plugs; there'll be a white one and a red on on that end) cables. They're like $4-$7 each. Plug the minijacks into your front and surround jacks on your sound card and the RCA ends into the appropriate jacks on your preamp.
