Taken from Fatwallet

Right now Gamestop will give you $100 off a PS3 with a trade in of a PS2 with an extra PS2 controller (Sony brand only) and 8MB memory card (any brand).

Wish they had this about a month ago...though the "Sony brand" controller would have killed the deal for me. Here a link:

GAMESTOP AD

Seems like a pretty decent deal if you are looking to upgrade. Heck if you are in for a BD player only, it's great.

Does seem VERY early to be offering incentives to purchase the most technologically advanced console that is only 2 months old..

I wonder if other stores will start doing the same, or giving away a game or controller free with system purchase

Somebody at Fatwallet said Gamestop is doing this to increase their inventory of PS2s. I'm not sure that makes much sense, anybody have an idea?

How much does Gamestop usually give for a used PS2? I think they had a $60 trade in around Xmas (w/o the controller, memory card).

And yeah I believe it was $60 bucks.

That makes absolutely no sense because a used PS2 sells for $109 used at Gamestop. They actually just LOWERED the price on the used system from $119 to $109. Check for yourself.

Even so, the system is priced brand new at $120-130 at most stores including Gamestop.

This isnt a big deal, they did the same thing with the 360 if I do recall and did the same thing with the Cube for the Wii...Not a big deal.

What is a big deal is that I walked into Walmart and they have had a ps3 sitting on the shelf all week and I went into TRU and they had no joke 20 60gig ps3s stockpiled on the shelf...I asked the guy if they just got those and if they are selling well. He said "We have had these for about 2 weeks, so what do you think? People wont buy them"

Now that is sad.

Yeah they did the same thing with the other consoles.. but that was either with a preorder or a launch console.

I dont ever remember them waiting 2 months, then offering an incentive to purchase a new console.

FYI- The Walmart story is completely off subject and is only going start another fight.

if there is more supply than demand just 8 weeks after launch, then there is a big problem. I have a ps3, am glad i have it, but sony is getting what they deserve. The public is paying attention to all the fake promises and the outright lies the company makes. I'm not saying MS is better, but they seem to have more respect for the truth and more respect for the intelligence of the public.

I think the PS3 is failing. All my hardcore gamer freinds, if you can call men in their 30's that, all wanted the 360 and all got a 360. None of them have even mentioned about getting a Ps3. this is the crowd sony hoped for. the early adopters. When i got my 360, friends wanted to come see it. But , with the PS3 no one even seems to care.....

I'm not trying to start trouble here, but I honestly wonder why this is the case. Was the 360 launch that much better than the PS3 launch, or is it that none of the launch games on PS3 are noticeably better than the current 360 games? I am happy with my PS3 because of the extras that it includes (BR playback, built in WiFi) and because of the promise of the best PS2 franchises continuing on PS3. It seems strange that sentiment is so overwhelmingly negative towards Sony right now and positive towards MS. After widespread criticism of their PC products, I don't see what MS has done to engender so much goodwill. I think much of the anger towards Sony stems from people believing the hype created by their quixotic PR statements and then being disappointed by the actual product.

Yes, I am having a hard time deciphering what exactly is going on as well. I come here and can't tell if the PS3 is really having that hard of a time or if it is just people trolling. It seems like every thread in here becomes a flamewar.

Anyway, back to the topic: I would have liked to have had this deal a month ago. Missed the $60 trade in by a few days. I wasn't going to GIVE my PS2 to GS for $40. For $100, I would have swapped in a second. What kills me is the "Second SONY controller" stipulation. Figures I have an off-brand second controller, but whatever.

For Gamestop to be offering something so soon after the launch of the PS3, I think it means that the machines just aren't moving as fast as they'd like. Taking used PS2 trade ins simply mean that the PS2s are still selling like hotcakes (which they are according to NPD numbers) and that the PS3 currently isn't a sales generator. With so few games out they can't make much money on any PS3 sales anyways.

To the above wondering what's going on with the 'lack' of PS3 movement off shelves:

1) Price

2)Game selection is VERY thin

3)No system sellers-including Resistence(connected to #2 I guess)

4)People with HDTV will care about Blueray movies.People without HDTV won't.There are more people without HDTV.Pretty simple to see

5)We're past xmas. We're slowly moving out of early adopter crowd, and drifting into casual/budget/fencesitter crowd.None of which are forking over $500(at the cheapest) for a game system that doesn't even include a game.People generally don't spend much money after xmas anyway. So even if they want a PS3,they'll likely wait a few months into the year when they're recovered from the holiday spending binge.

Chris,

Thanks for the pointer! I was looking for a decent deal on a PS3 for console and BD player. This is great since I won't need the PS2, etc. anymore. The deal is good until 2/18, so I'm just waiting for the Sony Card to show up and get another $100 off plus 3 pts/$1 spent on Sony products. Hopefully, it'll end up costing me just $399 + an old PS2 for a new PS3 60G. Sweet.

Nah, people are pissed that it is 600 dollars. We on this board are the exception, not the rule when it comes to consumer electronics. This system is priced to high (and yes, I know it is a BLu-Ray palyer and blah blah blah...). Toys R Us will NOT sell many 600 dollar systems. at that price it belongs in Magnolia at Best Buy.

No kidding.

Anyway, this blows. I got like, $20 for my Gamecube and maybe a little more for my PS2 a month ago.
