Due to some out of town company staying with me for three or four days, I'm going to forced to hook up one of the ps3's in the bedroom. For my late night gaming fix
, I don't want to bother the wife with any noise so I'm looking for some good headphones that also have a mic built into them...anyone have any suggestions? I'll be going hdmi from the ps3 into the tv...do I need to get headphones that have an optical connection
. I'm really kinda of lost here and hoping one of you guys have already traveled down this road

Any feedback would be much appreciated.

Hey, fellow 360 traitor! Hope you had a great Christmas with the family. I had a very wonderful time with my crazy bunch. Now I just need to recuperate from all the wonderfulness. It can sure wear you out!

As for your question, for the podcast, I bought a set of Logictech "ClearChat" USB headphones/headset. I've tested them out on the PC, and they sound about as good as you can get for about $50 Canadian. You don't get optical sound with them, but...actually, now that I think about it...I'm not sure how it works for sound when you plug a headset directly into the PS3. In which, case, I've likely not helped you out in any way possible.
But at least I can wish you a wonderful new year!

If I get a free moment with the TV later, I'll see what happens when you plug them into the PS3. I'll get back to you. Unless someone else writes and tells me how stupid I am. Which is ok, too.

Kek, look for the thread that I created that's called "Turtlebeach"... there are a few suggestions for gaming headsets in there.

it sounds like the astro a40 system is pretty good for surround sound. You'll have to buy the ps3 mic adapter to go with it though:

I'd like to either get the a40 or the newest ones from Turtlebeach. [EDIT: meant to say Tritton not turtle beach]

you could also check to see if you have a receiver that can already decode Dolby Headphone. If so, then you could hook up any good pair of headphones to get surround sound. But then that doesn't give you a built in mic.

Why do you need a mic if you are trying to be quiet in the bedroom wearing headphones? Doesn't that sort of defeat the purpose of being quiet if you are talking? Also, this is just for three or four days so are you wanting to invest in a gaming headset solution or just get by until you move out of the bedroom?

If you are investing then get the Astro Mixamp and the A40 headphones or other nicer headphones and clip-on mic. If you are just getting by then maybe an RCA to 3.5mm Headphone cable from Radioshack and any headphones and skip the mic or just cram in a BT headset. You'd need to rely on the line out of the TV (assuming your TV doesn't have mic out) to have enough power for your phones or plug in the composite cable to your PS3 and use that for sound.

Good question. I'm trying to come up with a solution that will minimize the sounds of battle so my wife can get some sleep. That being said, there will still be some collateral damage. If she can be spared the sounds of gun fire, rpg's, tank fire, and grenades being thrown at a wall only to bounce back and kill me, she will be happy. I would still like to communicate with my team members though with an occasional "F*BEEP*ng stupid *BEEP* *BEEPITY* *BEEP*, I blew myself up again
".

I see this as being a solution I will need to go to every so often in the future...and the kids could use it on the upstairs ps3 so as not to bother mom...

Considering I need these things asap, I may just go the headphone route and skip the mic (what ever I can find at best buy
).

Thanks Kess and same to you (hope you had a happy holidays that is
). All the kids got what they wanted...and I was able to spend the 3.8 days worth of effort unpacking/hooking everything up for them...so I guess it was a win all around

King, I found it and I'll be damn'd if I didn't even post a reply in there
. Some good suggestions I'll look into, but I'll probably be forced to buy something else as I need a local store to carry it. Thanks for the feedback.

The reciever will be down in the basement where the guest will be staying...I sure hope best buy has the new headphones for the ps3 from turtlebeach...although I'm not holding my breath

Well, after a couple of hours of quick research, I ended up going with these:

http://www.trittontechnologies.com/p...s/TRIGA611.htm

They have received good reviews and it looks like they will work for both my ps3 and 360...which is a huge plus.

Did overnight shipping and they should be here tomorrow.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

let us know how they compare to a real 5.1 system. those look good, and are cheaper than the Astros.

Kek, I'd say good choice, but I know nothing about that headset.

It's not wireless (which sucks) and looks like there will be either too much or too little length of wire.

In any case, let us know your impressions.

From the link "eight independent speakers to deliver true 5.1 surround sound audio". Too bad these are headphones and not home theater speakers where multiple speakers help instead of hinder.

Oh well, at least it has the mic you were looking for.

how does having multiple speakers in headphones hinder the sound?

Eight tiny speakers giving an limited spacial effect that is only needed with home theater speakers. DolbyHeadphone surround processing with two quality speakers is the better route (this is what the Astro A40 and highest end Turtle Beach X4 headphones use).

Bryansj, have you used/heard these headphones in person or are you making an educated guess that they will not perform as well as a two speaker setup based off the mechanics of the differing design

Through my limited research I did today there seems to be two camps here. One that maintains exactly what you said and then another that maintains the difference as negligable...with the only real difference being the cost and flexibility of the new Tritton (ie, setup for 360, pc, and ps3).

I have a nice 7.1 setup in my main theater/gaming room...I don't expect these headphones (or any for that matter...part of the experience for me is actually "feeling" the sub) to live up to those standards.

I started out with an HK receiver that had DolbyHeadphone output and it sounded great with stereo headphones. I then upgraded to an HDMI receiver that didn't have DH output. During that time this thread popped up http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=894251

At that point I was already in the DH two speaker camp so I went with that over the 8 speaker headphones and ended up with an Astro Mixamp with Senn 585 headphones. I never purchased the 8 speaker headphones in much the same way I would never buy Bose or Monster Cable
. Just going by what Turtle Beach offers shows their 8 speaker solutions as the low end and DH as the high end.

In your case you have issues with cross-platform functionality and needing them prior to your guests showing up. Good luck!

No can do mouse...ended up canceling the order. I put the order in yesterday and did overnight shipping (with a third party vendor, not the actual company). I then called them to verify it would be here this morning. The guy I spoke with guaranteed it would and told me he was going to personally go pull the item and get it ready for shipping. As of this morning, it had not shipped so I canceled the order. Looks like I'll be keeping the family up as I blow up bad guys with the sound bar/woofer in the living room

Just use some headphones/earbuds in your living room. Simple stereo headphones connected to your AVR should get you through a few nights. Get a cheap extension cable at Radio Shack if needed.
