The UK crime drama Gangs of London has been renewed for Season 2 and found a Statside home, with new co-producer AMC...AMC announced with Sky UK on Wednesday the Season 2 pickup, as well as the news that the 10-episode first season (which aired across the pond in April) will debut on AMC this fall for U.S. audiences

Set in the heart of one of the world’s most dynamic and multicultural cities, Gangs of London tells the story of a city being torn apart by the turbulent power struggles of the international gangs that control it and the sudden power vacuum that’s created when the head of London’s most powerful crime family is assassinated...the ensemble cast including Joe Cole (Peaky Blinders), Sope Dirisu (Humans), Colm Meaney (Hell on Wheels), Lucian Msamati (His Dark Materials), Michelle Fairley (Game of Thrones), Paapa Essiedu (I May Destroy You) and Pippa Bennett-Warner (Harlots)…

This is co-created and some episodes directed by Gareth Evans (The Raid, The Raid 2). Here's the British trailer (I'm sure AMC will release a new one eventually):

This was originally slated to be on Cinemax. A service with content that should now be on HBO Max. More fractured streaming. Thanks a lot AT&T!!

I hear this is a pretty violent show, how are they going to show this on AMC?...hopefully they don't edit out all the graphic scenes

Cinemax content is not on HBO Max. That may be what you meant, but I just wanted it to be clear.

Gotcha. Perhaps I worded it poorly while venting my frustration.

Cinemax content should have been rolled into HBO Max. Instead, AT&T / HBO have just left it hanging out there as a standalone linear service to fend for itself with little support and series scrambling to find other outlets for US premieres or follow on seasons. That is why GANGS OF LONDON had to find another home (AMC) to debut in the US. This would have been another great series to have on a CINEMAX banner on the HBO Max home page along with Banshee, The Knick, Warrior, Jett, Strike Back, C.B. Strike, Quarry, Rellik and Hunted.

I think the current regime at AT&T is ashamed of the "Skinemax" legacy and wants to divorce itself from any association with the Cinemax brand.

They shed that a few years back. Look at the shows I listed. They stepped up their game with Original Scripted series that leaned into an edgy / action adventure genre that worked well.

If you want to shy away from Skinemax, then perhaps don't put MAX in your re-branded name!! Most people and even a few publications initially thought that was an indication that all Cinemax content would be available on HBO Max. Nothing would have prevented them from creating a new name and banner for the recent Original content and never mention Cinemax.

Good 'ole AT&T. If they can break something that didn't need fixing, they will give it their best effort. :D

I'm not disagreeing with you. Regardless, the suits currently in charge still view the network as Skinemax and didn't find the attempts to revamp its content sufficient. They'd rather cut it off entirely than associate themselves with the brand anymore.

Never underestimate the incompetence of AT&T.

So this is like Line of Duty, filling in the schedule with previously released British cop shows? When does it come to AMC?

A little different. Line of Duty was an old show that started in 2012 and is only now being aired on American TV. Gangs of London is a much more recent show that debuted in April of this year. It's not unusual for a new series to take a few months to cross the ocean.

Hey, give 'em a break. It's not easy to keep devouring the competition while bleeding hapless telecommunications customers dry, day in and day out. And at least they hired that "Lily" chick back to do commercials for them again. Now she won't have to do porn to pay for her place in Malibu.

anyone watch this when it aired in the UK?...since it was originally slated for premium cable (Cinemax) I'm wondering about the level of violence, nudity, language etc

Excerpt from the Daily Mail.

Gangs of London is the most violent show on British TV with 113 deaths and torture scenes including eye-gouging, decapitations and strangling. Sky Atlantic's new crime drama Gangs of London has been rated the most violent show on British TV.May 18, 2020
Game of Thrones had 48 deaths in the first season. So, they definitely took the title as most violent show from them by a factor of almost three (3).

I don't watch much cable/AMC to know what is allowed these days, but I am guessing the editors have quite a bit of work ahead of them since this is not on a premium streaming service that would probably not censor much, if anything.

I love how at the end of the trailer it says 'even better in Ultra HD'...so I'm assuming it aired in 4K on Sky Atlantic (UK)...so USA viewers will get the bit-starved AMC 1080i/1080p version

I wonder if the series creator had any say in its US streaming home or if it is all Sky Atlantic? After Cinemax bowed out I would have thought Netflix or Amazon might be more appropriate. Amazon could recommend this to anyone watching THE BOYS and they likely wouldn't be disappointed. If his work ends up being heavily censored, I can't imagine he will be pleased.

EDIT: Not sure why I didn't list Peacock as a potential streamer. NBC Universal bought Sky in 2018 after they lost out to Disney for 20th Century Fox assets. They have listed a few Sky comedies that will be on Peacock as Originals. They are planning a Sky NEWS channel and they already have Premier League Soccer. Huh....

I wish there was a way I could watch the UK version...seeing it edited/watered down will take away a lot of what makes the show so good...I know someone on here will say that the level of violence should not matter but in a show about gangsters, graphic violence is a major part of the story
