No to ATI Adapter. It only works on selected ATI cards.

Dang, those tanscoders are like $120. I would be better off buying a used 8500 and getting the adapter. Is there any advantage for going with the transcoder?

The ATI adapter has a decent bit of problems. Mainly overscan issues, not to mention a limitation of output resolutions.
Transcoders are great because you can output from any computer with one.
