With DVD-R media prices varying from 50 cents to over $3 each, I know there must be some variability in compatibility. But in general, is there any consensus on compatibility of DVD-R media with the newer players on the market? I mean, if I go out and get a new DVD player today, can I reasonably expect it to be more compatible with my DVD-R collection than my current 1-3 year old players?

I've been buying the sub-$1 DVD-R discs, and so far I have had good success with my 3 year old Philips, a 2 year old JVC, and a new Sony player. I have noticed, though, that the newer Sony player takes less time to recognize some discs.
