Get to buy a new PJ - weird space - please help me choose

I should have around $1500 to spend on Wednesday, am looking at the H31 and the sp4805. :)

My PJ history: I had an old Philips VGA PJ - worked OK for a long time then the red died & I thought I would try to get a better rig. I parted out the lens & lamp on ebay and bought an Epson 7000b xga LCD PJ.

This was better than the Philips, but really unacceptable for HT use.

It had a bad tearing problem when connected to a htpc so even watching dvd's in xga wasn't pleasant because randomly the screen would just 'split' for a fraction of a second and this was most distracting to me, so I sold it.

I have a weird place I can use a PJ and the H31 & 4805 might not work for me - those of you who are in the know can advise me.

I have a throw distance of about 9 feet - I can maybe stretch this to 10 feet.

This is in our upstairs where the ceiling is slanted on both sides due to the roof. There is a 5 foot vertical wall, then a slope up another 5 feet, then the ceiling is flat across for about 7 1/2 feet where it again slopes down 5 feet then vertical 5 feet. Kind of like this:

btw - I've been lurking here for a long time - have read many posts by lots of you guys... just reading & learning - some of you people are a marvel :)

Looking at http://www.projectorcentral.com/Opto...ulator-pro.htm I see that if I can get to 11feet throw then I can project a 76inch diag. This would be great and I think that it can be achieved by mounting to the sloped part of my ceiling and moving the screen back & down. I've looked this over with the tape measure and I think it will work.

Here are a couple drawings that will show what I mean:

What I've done in the past:

Anyway, whatever advice anyone wants to give will be happily received. Thanks!

What do the ends of room look like? I am working with a similarly shaped room and have ended up going length-wise.

peace,
5' x 6' windows at each end of the room.

I have also considered going lengthwise however this would cause more family strain.

Here are a couple pictures that will show why this is a natural place to put the screen. I forsee painting it a dark color - maybe burgundy and putting a few nice speakers to the sides of a new screen that's moved inside - mounted about halfway down the sloping ceiling...

I just have to convince the wife that we don't need a closet - what we really need is a home theater. :)

Well, hopefully tomorrow is the big day - depends on whether a company cuts checks for me or not but they said they will be doing it on Wednesday.

I am still undecided - I suppose whichever one will work best with htpc is going to win the day. Just wish I knew... Somebody here have any idea?

There's a lot of info on using the 4805 with HTPC in the official 4805 thread -- people there have been very happy with DaGamePimps pixel mapped powerstrip settings. If you go with the 4805, you will have a lot of help in tweaking the image. Dan
According to the PJ calc I can get exactly 76" diagonal from the H31 @ 11'.

The 4805 only gives me 71" at the same throw.

If everything else is equal, the H31 wins as that's the size screen that works best for me and I really can't get more than 11' throw in my situation.

I guess I could do a DYI screen & make it 71" - I haven't bought yet. ;)

71" diagonal is the minimum the 4805 can do from 11'. 85" is the maximum from that distance. Dan
ahhh... that's the kind of info that I needed - thanks very much!!!
Re-Re-reading the PJ Calc figures I found the H31 can fill a 92" screen at 11 feet. I found a great deal out there on an H31 & "free" 92" screen so I ordered it. I've been getting the area ready, I'm planning on painting the walls & ceiling a flat dark green color.

I need to run some wires under the floor to connect from the audio out on my HTPC to the receiver that will be located just behind the screen (on the floor). I'll also need to get (or make) a ceiling mount for this thing.

Any good DIY guides for making a ceiling mount?

This is going to be fun. I'm keeping a photo record of the progress.
FedEx delivered my Optoma H31 and 92" Panoview screen today.

I got the HT area painted yesterday, so I temporarily put the PJ in about the place where it will be mounted & then hooked it up.

Glad I got the info here (on the HTPC forum) about getting a DVI cable, which I ordered with the PJ.

I put up an image on the wall - I have to say that even though it was mid day and I was projecting onto a dark green wall (painted Evergreen color flat), I was amazed at the image.

I made notes and then put up the screen, hung from black 1/4 " steel hooks.

Then I closed the curtains & popped in AVP & fired up the zoom player, WOW!!

I don't have the speakers mounted to the walls yet, I'm not sure if putting them up above the screen will be better or having them at about ear level while sitting would be better.

Anyway, this is great!! The screen fits exactly in my space with only about 3" space on either side. I'll post a play by play set of pics soon - if I can stop playing with this new PJ long enough that is... :)
