Getting ready to buy an HD-DVD player..quick question.

I just have a quick question. I bought a Toshiba player about a year ago, but when I got it home I had all kinds of trouble getting it to work with the HDMI cables. I could see the menus on the movies, but as soon as the movie started the screen went blank. It worked great playing the hd movies through the component cables. At the time I paid $399 for the player and when nothing worked in getting the HDMI to work which would enable the upconvert of my very large dvd collection, I decided that the price was not worth it and returned it.

I saw a quick blurb on another post that stated that the upconvert on these players will work through the component cables if the movies are copies and not originals. Is this true?

At the current price points I am going to buy one anyway, but this would be a great bonus for me.

Thanks for the input.

Thanks for the input.

Are you trying to watch a copy protect DVD over component at a resolution higher than 480p while using HDMI audio? That will cause the screen to go blank.
to answer ops question, yes, its true.
With the latest player/firmware hopefully the issue with your HDTV is now resolved. Try HDMI first (not the same cable as before if possible, that might have been the culprit), and if it still gives you problems then go to component. And yes, if you have a DVD backup of your movie it should upconvert over component.
Miata, I had the player hooked to my Sony projection HDTV directly using the HDMI cables only. I could see the menus, but when the movie started, blank screen, but still got sound.

Westgate/Midnight: Thanks for the info..that is good news. I will try again with all the latest firmware and hope that the HDMI will work. But knowing that copied movies will upconvert using component is huge.

Thanks for all your assistance!!!
