TOKYO — Filming begins Friday in Sydney on the final installment in the long-running Godzilla series, which marks its 50th anniversary this year.

"Godzilla: Final Wars" stars Rei Kikukawa, 26, as a United Nations molecular biologist, pop singer Masahiro Matsuoka, 27, as well as Akira Takarada, 70, who starred in the very first Godzilla movie. The film will open in Japan on Dec 4.

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show) Spoiler
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show) The 28th film in the series will pit Godzilla against 10 other monsters, wrecking Sydney, New York, Paris, Shanghai and much of Japan in the process, said a spokesman for production company Toei.

Sydney's Opera House and Harbor Bridge will be flattened by the giant lizard, the Sydney Morning Herald gleefully reported this month. "Everyone remembers those grainy black and white images of Godzilla attacking Tokyo office workers ... and millions of Japanese people — and potential tourists — will see Godzilla stomping his way across our beautiful country," the paper quoted a spokesman for the New South Wales state government office as saying.

Godzilla is set for a lengthy break after this, says Toei. "I don't think there will be another movie for at least five or maybe 10 years. I would like to pour all the know-how of the last 50 years into this commemorative movie and make it the best one," said producer Shogo Tomiyama. "I don't think another Godzilla movie will be made until a completely new way of visual expression is found."

The 27 movies, starting with "Godzilla" in 1954 and most recently "Godzilla, Mothra, Mecha-Godzilla: Tokyo SOS," released last year, have attracted more than 98 million viewers worldwide.

I wouldn't mind getting this on DVD when it comes out, but if Hollywood buys up the R1 rights, it might be a long time coming. The R2J version might not have English subs.

Sorry, I've been out of all this stuff for a while. How does godzilla look

nowadays? Are they using CGI?

Thanks,

I hope not. It's not the real Godzilla if it's not a man in a rubber suit, monsters flying on strings, and matchbox cars, trucks, and tanks being stomped on. Godzilla has to look like it was shot by some kid in his backyard to be genuine!

If it's the culmination of 50 years of motion picture technology, it should be shot in hi-def, have Hollywood class SFX, and be in the original Japanese with English subs instead of being dubbed in cheesy English.

That's only wishful thinking. But it sounds like they are aiming for a large international audience instead of just a Japanese domestic audience, so it has to be a cut above the typical Japanese production.

Man in suit!

I guess the man-in-suit days are history for this storied franchise. But, what "completely new way of visual expression" is Toei anticipating in the next "five or maybe 10 years?"

I don't get tagging a spoiler moniker to something like a Godzilla flick - EVERYONE knows the Big G will stomp on a given city's cherished landmark(s).

Being surprised or spoilered by such info is like saying ya' wouldn't have known James Bond defeats the super villain...

Yes and some people do feel that way. There was a big brouhaha over spoilers in thread titles a while ago. They are not allowed. I am not "finding fault", just trying to make things run smoothly.

Don't forget that there are people growing up who probably have never seen James Bond or a Godzilla movie before and i guess thats why you have to have spoilers just in case a newbie comes across such material.

I remember newspapers talking about a surprise in The Sixth Sense before i watched it now they didnt give the surprise away but the fact they mentioned it meant i was looking for it and figured it out, its best to know nothing about a film before watching it as that way you can be surprised.

I've been looking around but I haven't seen any release date for the DVD for the original uncensored Godzilla. It is in theaters around the country now.

Actually I found the thread title a pretty bad spoiler even with the word censored. I mean, I'm guessing it's not "Godzilla To Preach In Finale", or Godzilla To Deliver Pizza In Finale". There's only one word, a "D" word that would make that title make sense. :(
