I performed a search, and the threads that came up were from mid 2008 or older, so I going to post this in case new sets have arrived on the scene.

Easy scenario:

- You are buying a flat screen tv for your bedroom

- You are replacing a 32" Polaroid LCD

- You want a 37" or 40"

- TV will only be used for HDTV and DVD watching

- You have a maximum budget of $850

- You do not own a blu-ray player, nor will you purchase one

- You want a good, reliable TV

What do you buy?

I'm posting this because in all of the research that I've done so far, the specs between some of the leading manufacturers are so close that it seems nearly impossible to choose. One will have a higher contrast ratio, one has better inputs. I'm just looking for the best bang for the buck!

Thank you for your input and your opinions. If you know of a recent thread where this has been covered, please point me in the right direction and I will gladly go read it!

If light levels in your room are reasonable, how about the 42" 720p plasmas?

Panasonic TC-P42X1, Samsung PN42B450 or LG 42PQ30/20. Typically these days in the US they can be had for $250 below your max price. If it's not overkill for a bedroom TV, 50" models are also within your budget, too.

I hate the gray letterbox bars of the Lg and Samsung, and the Panny is just too dim.

Check out LCDs from Samsung, 530, 540, 550 or Sony S5100 or closeout 40V4100.

Thank you for the replies. I've read quite a bit about the Panasonic plasma's, but I really do think that the 42" tv will be pushing it as far as size goes.

I just searched for the Samsung models and I found the 530, could not find the 540, and the 550 exceeded the budget limit. The Sony fit the budget.

So based on the critera of the 40" limit and staying within the budget, what is the best bang for the buck?

Thanks all!
