Going To Buy New DVD Player Help!

792 Views 13 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  soldonandy
Ok,

Here is my setup. I have the Panny 42" 7UY ED Plasma for my tv and I have an Onkyo 6.1 surround system. The only thing missing was my dvd player as I've been using a RCA that's NOT progressive and is about 5 years or more old. So far it's worked fine don't ask me why with the pics looking good but I know I"m missing out and it's crapping out so I'm look to buy a new DVD player.

We were in Walmart today and I found the Panny S27 player and bought it becuase it was cheap and had progressive but I get home and find on here that it wasn't rated to hot and also it didn't have a optical out for audio which I use so I took it back.

Tomorrow I'm going to Best Buy or Circuit City and they are right next to each other and getting a good player. I want to spend in between 80-130 dollars if possible but want a good player to enjoy movies on my NICE plasma. I use component for the DVD player so I need one with that and optical out.

So what do you guys suggest?

THX,

Ryan

The sony 775 may be a good choice for you.
Anothing quick question I'm guessing my panny must have built in progressive scan since I was able to watch dvd pretty well with a 5 yr old player. Which should I use the TV or my DVD Player?
I've seen some threads talking about this unit freezing. Should I be concerned about this. And if I went a little bit higher in price could I get something better would it be worth it. I want to take full advantage of my 7UY.
I just went through a similiar process and bought a cheapo Aspire DVD player from Radio Shack yesterday, but took it back today in favor of a Phillips DVP642 from Target. It seems to be well-regarded as a good budget DVD player.
In about 2 1/2 hours I'm going to bb or CC to get my player and I'm still not 100% sure what I"m getting. I was kind of thinking the Sony but I've heard it has a lot of issues with progressive and has a slow read speed. So know I"m still unsure. I really hate to even spend 130 dollars on something that won't be up to par. What if I was willing to spend a little extra money. What's the next step up. Basically I"m looking for a good dependable player that will give me the awesome DVD pictures I was looking for when I bought my plasma.

this is on sale at BB this week for 149.00 any comments

The Sony is rated better the the 5970. Here's a link to a review on it.

I don't understand the big deal. You can return the player if you're not happy with it. There are so many differences between displays that problems others report may not be an issue with yours. For the $130 progressive players the two most preferred are the Sony 775 and the Pioneer DV-578. Once you move to the $300 upconverting players the Panasonic S97 and the Sony 975 are the most common.

If you want to check out the Toshiba try the combo unit SD-V592.;)
First, if you are trying to get a player to give you a picture anywhere close to hi-def, you probably won't find any, especially in this price range. Even with the more expensive upconverting players there is disagreement on whether they really do much in terms of improving the picture quality beyond what a decent progressive scan player will produce.

If you are unsure about the sony 775, another player in this price range recommended alot is the Pioneer player referenced in this thread:

Good luck.
And since my tv is and ED Panny would it probably not make much sense anyways to go up to the upconverting players?

In my opinion, no. Others may differ though. Since you are buying at a local store though, you can do a little playing around with the units since it will be easier to return them if you are not satisfied.

Any fixed display device is progressive by nature. They are not interlaced displays.

A DVD is a 525 line source. If you take a 525 line source and upconvert (interpolate) the signal I believe you will be adding information that is erroneous. Your plasma is then going to take that signal and downconvert it to it's NR or 480 lines.

I don't do it but that doesn't mean that there aren't people that do.

thx for the help everyone. I think I'll decide between the sony and pioneer then.

I noticed a lot were getting the sony for $99. Now both BB and CC are listing it at 130. Does that particular player go on sale often?
Why is everyone talking about upconverting, I believe he said he would be hooking it up to his TV via component. Assuming your plasma cost you a few dollars, I am wondering why you budgeted for only a low end DVD player? It seems a shame to allocate for a plasma and not be able to push it a little with a good quality DVD player. Bottom line, I wouldn't get all bent out of shape on which cheapy to get, they all are in the same league in terms of limitations, primarily depth of image, detail and reliability. If you must settle for something under $150, look at the Pioneer 578a and perhaps the Yamaha DVS5750. If you can spend a little more, I'd bypass the Circuit City and Best Buy offerings and head over to Tweeter and look at some of their midrange stuff or go to a local specialty store and look at an Onkyo, low end Marantz. You might spend a little more but you'll get a better warranty and a higher performance piece that will wring out a little more detail on your plasma and give you more long term satisfaction.
