Going to triple 18s...

364 Views 5 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  BP1Fanatic
We are moving, and the new house has a bigger theatre room. As such, I’m hoping to put a spare 18” marty cube to use.

I currently run two 18” dayton ultimax subs in enclosures very similar to mini Marties. The cube enclosure has an 18” stereo integrity driver.

As the woofers are not all the same, will I be introducing any issues? The plan is to have them all upfront, with the cube acting as a center mount (with isolation material between center and sub).

Thanks

Do you have any other placement options? It would be nice if you could place one sub as best you can, then add another and place that to even out the first sub, and then place the third to even those two out. I might be ideal to get one of those in the back of the room some how if you can, but, hard to say until you really get there and experiment.

If you have no other placement options, then you can always go for it and EQ and see how it goes.

I don't think the different woofers will be a problem, if one sub goes lower than the other then you just don't get the benefit of that sub evening out the others response lower.

Congrats on the new place!

Agree on the idea of having two subs on the front stage, one nearfield in back. However if you really want to try using one as a center stand, then I would integrate the other two up front first, take measurements, then try adding the third in the middle to see how much of a benefit it provides. If the improvement is minimal or less, then I would try rear nearfield placement for the third.
Back In Bass (with DJ Magic Mike) or in your case with the 3rd sub, back END bass!
I've never configured more than one sub myself, so to some extent "what do I know," but I listen to a lot of podcasts and read a lot of articles and talk to a lot of people about HiFi... and my general understanding is that even numbers of subs (2 and 4) are highly recommended over odd numbers of subs (1 and 3), and the things that I read and hear never recommend someone going from 2 subs to 3...

2 --> 4 = Good
2 --> 3 = Generally not recommended
