Has anyone used GoM Anchorage for a speaker grill cover? I like the color choices and texture but the fabric doesn't seem to be terribly breathable. I don't like the texture or color choices of the FR701 which some sites specify can be used for speaker grills, but I don't see much on the Anchorage other than for treatment covers.

Is there a better choice that still has a similar color palette?

Anchorage was used in this theater and was approved by the designer Shawn Byrne who knows a thing or two about acoustics. Room calibrated by Adam Pelz. Professional photographers do crazy things, that ceiling is painted black.

Supposedly GOM isn't as transparent as they lead you to believe. Floyd Toole posted here recently with his research. Search the forum for his name and you should find it.

Great looking room - black ceiling? Wow, can’t trust anything your eyes tell you these days.

Thanks! I read the thread where Dr. Toole was saying that GoM was not acoustically transparent, and it is interesting information. As speaker cloth, I can see where it would definitely "muffle" the highs to some degree, especially the anchorage fabric which has the lowest NRC rating of pretty much all the AT fabrics that GoM makes (.85)

However, losing a few db at the high end is something that equalization should be able to easily account for just like with an AT screen that shows similar rolloff at higher frequencies. I am not terribly concerned, but I am taking measures so that the GoM will only cover the surround speakers. I will be replacing the Onyx GoM Anchorage fabric planned for the fabric around the screen with something like DMD fabric, which I have used in the past and should work just fine. But that is easy because it is black. There are few colors made in the DMD fabric, but aside from the black none that I am interested in. I don't want the old school purple burgandy, and I don't want fire engine red, I am looking for more of the Mulberry color in the Anchorage fabric. I made a design change to the ceiling as well that will allow me to use basic black grill cloth over the Atmos speakers if I find the GoM is causing any issues.

I only wish there was a little bit of stretchiness in the GoM Anchorage.. I am worried about getting it tensioned right and no having it sag, especially on the ceiling panels.

Anchorage is horrible for use in front of speakers. It's an old standard that people keep using. For sure there are a lot of colors, but acoustically "it sucks". GoM have many better materials now.

Here is some informal recent testing we did on a few materials.

If you like black, we also tested a ton of 120" wide fabrics, we like using these for screen walls with just a perimeter track and losing the black backing behind the AT screen.

be aware that the AcousticMac fabrics do not have the same fire rating as GOM fabrics, if that bothers you. GOM caters to commercial office spaces and public spaces for furniture, wall, and cubicle coverings. As such they are pretty diligent on fire ratings. Home theaters are just silly nuisance that they indirectly tolerate. You can't place an order directly with GOM, but it will ship from one of their distribution centers. You place an order with a distributor who doesn't attempt to maintain an inventory unless they manufacture their own acoustical panels. Fabricmate.com is a popular intermediary. You can order free samples directly on the GOM website.
