Good <$1000 Front-Firing Sub?

573 Views 13 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  JamieSapp
I'm in an apartment with people below me. I'd love to go with an SVS or a HSU (after reading all the great comments about both), but am worried about the effect that 20hz firing into the neighbors living room might have on my rental agreement.

Does anyone know of a good front firing sub below $1000? Or has anyone lived in an apartment and not had a problem with an SVS or HSU with people below him/her?

Thanks for the help.

It doesn't matter if it's a top, bottom or side firing sub. The bass freq don't know the difference. :D

but seriously it doesn't matter.
I know that frequency-wise it doesn't make a difference. I'm just worried about the virtual drum-beating above their head with the speaker pointed at the tops of their head. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'd also think that this would also cause more floor vibration (great in any other setting) which would translate to the neighbors as "annoying vibrating ceiling." Otherwise, I'd go down firing.

I really don't think it would matter.

I mean does a kick drum, which is struck from the side, resonate through the floor an more or less than another bass drum struck from above?

The sub is designed to vibrate everything, and since the floor is physically in contact with the sub one way or the other you're still going to be tumping vibrations into the ground at the same intensity regardless of position I would think :)

I don't think it matters either, but the VTF-3 is an awesome front firing sub.
i don't know if it matters fornt or bottome either.

New I like my PW2200 for well uner 1000. I saw 2 Used servo 15s for $100 CANADIAn each on audiocanuk. If you can get one of those for less than your $1000 budget used it would kick BUTT.
For $850 the locally LA made front firing VTF-3 has simply been amazing in my system

I wouldn't rule out SVS or Hsu just because of this. Regardless of how the driver is oriented, you're neighbors are going to get a good dose bass if you turn it up. IMO, the best performing subs would be the SVS PB2-ISD or your choice of one of the PC Plus subs. I also strongly suggest putting a small part of that budget towards towards an eq for your sub. Something like the BFD is very effective and inexpensive(just over $100). Just do a search on "BFD" if you're not familiar with it.

If you really are hell bent on not getting a downfiring sub, then there's two things I can think of. Get the downfiring sub of your choice, and simply turn it on it's side. Tom V of SVS has said there are no adverse effects of putting a tube or box sub on their sides. The other thing you can do is get some bass shakers, put them on the floor near the sub and wire them out of phase with your subwoofers. This will reduce the transmission of vibrations, but it's not going to stop the sound from going through.

Thanks for all the help and ideas. I've got a lot to think about.

I have a Hsu VTF-3 - In a word - Fantastic

However - regardless to the direction of you sub low freq will doubtlessly travel to adjoining apartments.
I would go for the VTF-2. Granted I don't know much about subs, but I live in a house and my VTF-2 SCARES me. I have to constantly turn down the volume, worrying that my neighbors will come next door and complain. The walls of my house shake on loud scenes. Only $500, save some money for something else. :)
