I just watched Live Free Or Die Hard and rather enjoyed it. I almost never watch movies these days, but it reminded me how much I enjoyed the original Die Hard and other action flicks back in the day. Now I'm wondering what I might have missed since the 80s. Could you recommend me some titles? I'd like to see things blow up. A touch of comedy is appreciated. I was thinking the other day I should check out A-Team. Movies along those lines. I appreciate your feedback.

A great way to find action movies is to search the actors at IMDB. If you like Bruce Willis, he's made a career of action movies. Arnold, Costner, Smith, Cage, Crow, etc, etc. Many times you can link from a co star in an action flick to see more of the same. If you don't mind crossing into fantasy or scifi, the lists will get bigger.

You can do the same with some directors. Michael Mann is a good choice.

That's a pretty broad timeframe but I can't think of anything that fits your description better than True Lies. I suppose the Transporter flicks would fit the description too. More recently, Wanted was pretty fun along with the Daniel Craig James Bond movies.

I second the 'True Lies' nod. That movie is overlooked in so many conversations around this topic, but I swear to God, that is Arnold's best movie (except MAYBE "T:2"...but that's debatable).

Two worthy entries in my book would be 'Con Air' and 'The Rock'. Both are a bit different from each other, but definitely fit the bill in this discussion.

Every month at my place I host "Action Movie Saturday". We get together and have some food and then in the theater watch a classic action flick while the girls go into the living room for a chick-flick on the 'small screen' (55" LCD). It's a blast...no pun intended

A few other 'classic' action flicks worth a watch...'Tango & Cash', 'Demolition Man', 'The Running Man', 'Ronin', 'Bad Boys', 'Under Siege'...oh I could go on forever.

I loved true lies, saw it 4x at the mann chinese theater over 2 week period in that scorching hot 1994 summer in LA. But for some reason it does not hold up or have good replay value like say pulp fiction or Leon. It's great for someone like OP if he's never seen it..esp if you've got a good HT set up for those F14's missile climax in the end. This was james cameron at his finest hour with T2 also.

I guess all the Die Hard flicks should work, don't like the third that much but thats just my opinion.

Lethal Weapon 1,2,3,4, same here the third is a bit weak.

The Peacemaker

Shooter

Taken

The Rock

Con Air

Red

From Paris With Love

Crank

Well, Smokin' Aces and Hot Fuzz definitely fit this discussion. I enjoyed both as action-comedies. The Other Guys was also not bad (one scene alone made it worthwhile). Also Bad Boys 1 and 2, Knight And Day and The Rundown.

A little outside action-specific, but I enjoyed Kung Fu Hustle (martial-arts comedy) and the Men In Black movies are sci-fi/action/comedy. And The Fifth Element is a great sci-fi action comedy (if you can get past Chris Tucker)

Although not as comedic, the Bourne movies are excellent, as well as Mission Impossibles and the latest Rambo and Shoot 'Em Up.

I think people already pointed out The Transporter films. There's also Mr. And Mrs. Smith, Unstoppable, and Faster.

Hope that helps.

A little earlier (90's) you have El Mariachi and Desperado, The Last Boy Scout and The Long Kiss Goodnight

Thanks for a lot of suggestions. I was surprised to see how many I had watched for a guy who claimed to not watch movies any more.

The Expendables – For some reason I assumed it’s bad. I’ll look in.

THE DARK KNIGHT – The previous one ('Batman Begins' or something) did nothing for me, so I’m on the fence. I seem to have trouble getting into movies based on comics and other characters that are too far removed from life as we know it.

True Lies – Did nothing for me, but I might have been too young. (DNFMBIMHBTY)

Transporter flicks – I heard they were pretty bad. Or is it just the last one that's bad?

Wanted

the Daniel Craig James Bond movies

Total Recall – DNFMBIMHBTY

'Con Air'

'The Rock' – DNFM

'Tango & Cash'

'Demolition Man'

'The Running Man'

'Ronin'

'Bad Boys' - DNFM

'Under Siege'

Die Hard 3

Predator 2

Speed – Enjoyed it.

Black Hawk Down – Enjoyed it.

M:I 2 – Watched the first one. DNFM

Terminator 2 – Enjoyed it.

Underworld

I don't mean to be rude when I say "did nothing for me." I'm sure some of my favorite films are not your cup of tea.

I'll be back.

At the rate I watch movies (once every few months), this list should last me the life time. Thanks for your feedback!
