I found a good deal on newegg, it is pretty much what I wanted except that it comes with the 80W phenomII processor instead of the 65W AthlonII that I really wanted. Will the extra 15W make much difference in overall heat and noise.

Basically I want a combo with a micro atx mobo, with the 785G chipset that takes ddr2 ram(for cost), HDMI output, and a athlonII 65W cpu.

If BIOS of the mb supports unlocking the disabled cores and if you want a Phenom II X4 3.1GHz at $100, this is a good choice.

Otherwise you'd better buy Athlon II X2 (240, $60, is plenty enough for video playback) and a 785G mb (~$80).

First off that wattage is for max power usage, and you can drop the stock voltage and even the multiplier to reduce power consumption.

OTH, the 15w difference really isn't anything you'll actually miss and unless you were looking to do something reall passive AND in a cramped enviroment the extra heat won't be noticable either.

Low wattage stuff is cool, but not essential when building an HTPC.

Here are actual measurements (using Kill-A-Watt) of the power consumption of a system consisting of
  • Athlon II X2 240 2.8GHz/Phenom II X2 550 3.1GHz with the stock cooler
  • GA-MA785GM-US2H
  • DDR2-800 2 x 2GB
  • Onboard video
  • WD Caviar Blue 640GB
  • Enermax MODU82+
  • NSK2480 with 2 x 120mm fan

Cool'n'Quiet is on.
CPUIdleMKV (HA on)Prime95
Athlon II X2 240 2.8GHz55W64W118W
Phenom II X2 550 3.1GHz64W74W142W
Phenom II X4 "B50" 3.1GHz65W75W192W
At idle/video playback, the difference is only ~10W, but at load the difference is 24W (74W if you unlock the blocked cores). You'd better get a good CPU cooler (and a good mb supporting ACC/unlocking II X2's disabled cores) if you go with Phenom II X2.

BTW there is absolutely no performance difference in video playback between Athlon II and Phenom II even if you use IGP (i.e. L3 cache is a waste for video playback, and also for x264 encoding).

I was thinking of going this route with a future build. What mb would do this for the phenom x2 550? (AMD Phenom II X2 550 Black Edition Callisto 3.1GH)

That 15 watts will cost you around $22 a year if you leave the pc on all the time, live in California and run your hvac 24/7 like many of us (pushes you into a higher tier).

Something to consider when comparing prices.

Southbridge must be SB710 or SB750, but this is not enough, BIOS must support it. All GIGABYTE 785G mb support it. GIGABYTE GA-MA790GP-UD4H too. I am not sure of other mb with SB710/SB750.

BTW Phenom II X2 545, 550, 710, 720 (maybe 705e too) could be turned into X4. But there is no guarantee of success (the success rate looks very high, though). The disabled cores may be actually defective.
