Good Pre/ Power Amp replacement for a Sonyreceiver

344 Views 6 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  sheggsl
I would like recommendations from forum memebers on a good pre power amp combination to replace a Sony receiver. I would like the amp to be able to

1. Process 96/24 bit audio

2. Allow component video switching

3. Possibly offer multi-zone capability

4. Be upgradeable

Barring this I would also welcome coomments from users of Meridian systems on what the best power amp is for the 561, and also is the 861 far superior to the 561, and does the improvement justify the price increase

What are the other parts of your system, & what is your primary use (music or HT)? You're talking about Meridian... what price range are you considering?

Greg
Thanks everyone for your replies, my budget is tentatively set at $4K but I am prepared to wait and save up a bit more if necessary, I would rather wait a while and spend a bit more on something that will suit all my future needs i.e be upgradeable.

My concerns are

1. To get the best bang for buck Pre-amp / Power amp combo out there

2. To determine what the best power amp is to partner the pre-amp I chose.

sheggsl,

What is your $ budget. If this is your first steps into separates and want to keep the costs down, but still want the full sound of separates check out this combo: http://www.parasound.com/products/preamps/avc1800.html http://www.parasound.com/products/am...s/hca855a.html

B&K makes cost efficient products: http://www.bkcomp.com/ref.html

But the bottom line is what is $ budget?

Also...why even bother connecting component video to a pre-amp...go directly to your video source. I always felt the best video connection is a direct video connection.

sheggsl,

Here is an excellent combo.....The Sherbourn 5/1500 Amplifier (5 channels x 200 watts) and two good points...you can buy it here at AV Science from Alan for $1300. I believe he and David use this amp and he has access to alot of equipment. And secondly the company makes matching mono and dual blocks for future upgrades. Check out: http://www.sherbourn.com/products/5-1500.html

For a Pre-Amp...the Sherbourn goes excellently with the Sunfire Theater Grand which I believe has been upgraded to the Theater Grand II.

Check it out at: http://www.sunfire.com/products/index.html

This is also upgradeable because they just offered to Theater Grand owners and upgrade path to the Theater Grand II.

You should be able to find this discounted for well under $2700 dollars. So this set-up would get in below your $4000 budget and you would have, in my opinion, a high end and high quality system.

Worth a listen!

Thanks Archangel for your reply I am going to be auditioning three systems this coming weekend,

1. Meridian 561

2. Tag Macleren AV23R

3. The new Musical fidelity AV Amp

unfortunately I could not find any dealers in London Uk who stocked the Sunfire Theatre grand. Have you done managed to do any comparisons between this system and say the Tag or Meridian? Your comments would be most welcome
