Good screen for <$300

1098 Views 7 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  chengka
I need a 16:9 screen that is 7-8 feet wide. What is a good quality screen preferably under $300? Should I go with glass bead, matte white, or grey? The screen will probably be used with either a Panasonic PT-AE500U, AE700U, Sanyo PLV-Z2, or Z3 in a dimmly lit room. Any suggestions?

you need to get the pj first. Then see what you think of the image, and what you need to improve on.

there's a lot of factors you need to take into consideration. I have learned very quickly that choosing a screen is a harder decision then the pj.

Start by getting some samples from various companies sent to your house. try not to get lost in opinions on this forum. Use them as a guide, learn from others mistakes, but ultimately, you need to see those samples yourself because what looks good to you is what counts

for under 300 bucks, if you want to build a frame, and buy material, you have a lot of options. If you want a pull down, right away I'll recommend a da-lite high power, Model B with tensioning that should be under 300 if you shop around. 52x92 ( 106"d) is the largest they make without going cusomter that I have seen. Jason Turk is the AVS guy here, and you should really contact him for some great prices.

the da-lite HP is not for everyone though. are you ceiling mounting? table mounting? is your room dark or lots of sunlight? The list goes on. Start reading and good luck. But whatever you do, GET SAMPLES FIRST.

Hi,

I observed one funny thing about Dalite screen, in my case High Power material:

- Model B square 96" x 96" cost $x

- Model B video format 72" x 96" cost 1.2 time more

- Model B HDTV format cost 2 times more

- If you order *cut to size* with 72" x 96" cost 3 times more !!!

Doesn't make sense to me

I'm in search for fix screen material, so I can build my own frame, my best choice is choose square format then cut screen off the roller, and yes with High Power 96" wide B-model include shipping for less than $300

Hope this help

yeah I agree on the pricing thing. complete B.S

What they ask for a simple fixed frame is insane. Complete ripoff.

I'll build my own thanks
I couldn't agree more, it is a complete rip

So true, but paying a lot of money for a screen would relieve me from the daily torture I go through reading here and trying to decide whether to paint or buy material to attach to my frame;)

If you have the slightest bit of DIY experience, you can build a frame and then the world is your oyster. Most materials are under $7.00 a square foot, so unless you want a HUGE screen, you can make one for way under $300. If you are set on buying, then you are limited to pulldowns at that price.

I'm interested in building my own fixed-frame screen, but I'm not sure where to get the material.

chengka, are you talking about using something generic like black-out cloth?

If anyone knows where you can buy dalite or other major manufacturer's screen material, let me know. I'm guessing you are all refering to buying a pull-down and cutting it. Seems like such a waste...
Call Jason at Av Science, the sponsor of this site. He has the best prices. You can find stickies at the top of the screens forums. Generally people only cut out a High Power pulldown, because the HP material price is much higher.
