Hi, new guy here...

I'm looking for good speakers and sub to setup a 5.1 surround system. I know this is the speakers forum, I'll be making a new thread soon in the subwoofer forum for sub suggestions.

I've read around tons of different threads here, but there are so many different suggestions that I'm still lost. Plus people's home theater area are usually bigger than what mine will be so I may not need such powerful speakers.

Ok, I'm set on buying an Onkyo TX-SR604 receiver, so all I need is speakers and a sub. They don't have to be super powerful as the actual home theater area will be quite small, just about 12' x 7'. That is not the size of the whole room, which is a tad over 19'x9', but it is the area which I want to have "enclosed" by the the speakers. Walls and ceiling are all made of concrete.

Right now I'm kind of inclined towards 4 x Infinity Primus 160 satellite speakers and an Infinity Primus C25 center from Crutchfield, mainly because people seem to talk well about Infinity Primus speakers, they aren't very expensive and Crutchfield is the only store I've found that offers Free shipping for Puerto Rico too.

Any other suggestions are welcomed, thanks!

Vanns doesn't ship to Puerto Rico...

By the way, I won't be purchasing the part for like another month or two, so today's specials won't really matter much unless they'll last that long. I'm taking suggestions now, though, cuz I wanna purchase everything as soon as I receive the money and I wanna start learning what's good and what's crap.

Might be a bit outta your price range and not sure on shipping to PR but you might wanna take a look at SVS. They have a complete system with sub for $1k. You can buy just the speakers for $600. Loads of good reviews.

Thanks for the suggestion svsneo. I did check with SVS and they do ship to PR, the only problem is their shipping to PR is ridiculously, excessively, expensive. Shipping for just the 4 satellite shelf speakers and the center speaker (no sub) is $208.38!! I don't know what calculator they're using, but it's waaay off.

...Personally I'd go for the Missions, I've heard them & they're great, and for $249 a steal too!

I would consider that store if I didn't have to call every time to know the shipping cost. Thanks for the recommendation anyway.

Did you talk to them directly to discuss this? They have notoriously great customer support and will likely be totally up front with you about the charge. I would be somewhat surprised to learn that they even charge more than what it costs them to double box (if done), pay the shipper and any related duties.

Well I contacted them to ask how much was the shipping cost but I didn't try to get them to lower it. It is a little high. Heck, at Crutchfield, shipping for a 98lbs sub is only $145 by UPS 2nd Day Air. Even if you triple boxed it, packaging will never weight that much and it doesn't cost that much either.

I have to call them to ask how much is shipping for any speaker configuration I consider buying. But if it's worth it I'll do it.

Vaya lou! Are those that much better than Infinity Primus 160 speakers? Are they worth the extra cost (which will likely be more than $100). Keep in mind that I'm getting free shipping from Crutchfield. Now since 4 x mission speakers are much cheaper than 4 x Primus 160, those can make up for the shipping cost.

So anyone else think the Mission m70 are better than the Primus 160?

The Primus 160 is a much bigger speaker than the little M70. The Primus has a 6.5" woofer while the Mission is 4.25 ". You'll get deeper bass from the Primus speaker and much more power handling. Max power for the Mission is only 75 watts, which is still probably plenty for your small listening area. The Primus handles up to 150 watts.

Look at the dimensions of two speakers:

Primus 14-9/16"H x 8-1/4"W x 11-1/8"D

Mission (HxWxD): 9.65" x 5.90" x 9.10"

Alright then, Primus 160 it is.

Choosing a sub is what's giving me the most trouble. Here's a link to my sub thread if anyone can help: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=786408

Thanks.

Which would you guys prefer... Infinity Primus 360 or SVS Bookshelf Speakers?

If I were to decide just from the specs then the Infinity speakers look better, but that's just on paper. Which one performs better in the real world?

Since many people have been recommending the AV123 x-ls speakers, I emailed AV123 for a shipping quote for five of them. I asked for five because I was also suggested to get the exact same speakers for all around, including center. But then others recommended to get an actual center speaker for center that matched the speaker series (like the x-cs center for the x-ls speakers).

So, is it better to have the exact same speakers all around or get an actual center speaker for the center?

PS. AV123 replied. Shipping for five x-ls speakers is $277 UPS 2 day air! I know that's pretty much the right shipping cost, but it's still kind of expensive.

So it's $825 for five x-ls shipped. I could get five Infinity Primus 160 for $449.95 shipped. Are the x-ls really worth the extra $375?
