Uses

-Xbox 360 Gaming (COD:Modern Warfare 2,)

-Connecting my MacBook Pro to it to maybe work on projects (13" screen=small)

-Cable and TV Shows

My dorm room is actually sort of big because it's an honors dorm, something like 14 feet by 8 feet. I've heard that the quality difference between a 37 and 40" TV is actually kind of big, is this true? I'm looking at 32,37, and 40" screen sizes. I know Samsung is top quality, but I would like to as low as possible. I know Toshiba can be good, and Sony is just expensive. Should I just stick with a good 37" screen to stay cheap? Keep in mind I have like $300 worth of BestBuy giftcards (graduation gifts, lol), but I'd like it to be around $700, and actually need a TV with HDMI inputs for those uses.

Seems like a pretty small dorm to me. If the building is only 14 feet by 8 feet, there can't be too many rooms in it. Heck, my dorm room at Purdue was bigger than your whole building.

As for the TV, leave it at home and study, study, study.

However, if you have your heart set on one, for the price you've mentioned, I'd check out the Panasonic S1 or the Samsung B550.

I was valedictorian at my high school, I have a pretty good idea of the importance of studying and already have a schedule of spending at least 2 hours in the library every day to try and keep up a 4.0.

The TV is more for late night things, like watching a few TV shows I keep up with (Lost, Heroes, 24, Chuck), movies, news, etc, or if I want to play some games with a few friends in the dorms. I think I might just go with a 32, as long as I'm close to the screen, it really wont' make a difference if I get a 40".

Wow, we have something in common. I was valedictorian of my high school class also (maybe that's why I'm still such a smart a** today). I was just giving you a hard time. If you're looking for a 37" TV, I still would suggest the Samsung B550, the Panasonic S1, or perhaps even the LG LH30. All of them are 60hz models, but I selected them because they fit your size and price range.

Study hard & knock 'em dead!!

Are you in a single dorm? If not that does seem pretty small.

I'm moving into the dorms this year too and right now I have a 32in TV in a 14 by 14 bedroom. I do however think I could go up to a 40in in the room.

I'm not sure if you would want to go up to a 40in in your smaller room or not, I don't think it's impossible though.

Yea I actually do have a single room. Kind of upset because I wanted the experience of having a roommate, but now I don't want to ask to switch and get a bad roommate and end up regretting it. My single is connected with someone else's room via a bathroom though so it's not entirely private. They're still putting the finishing touches on the renovations so I can't see what the room looks like yet, but I'll definitely see where I can place my chairs and where I can put the TV. I'm now leaning towards 32" if I can just count on staying close to the screen. Now I sort of wish that I got a desktop though. I did get a 13" MacBook Pro (for almost $1200!), and 13 is too small if I'll be in my dorm working on some paper. I could have gotten a Quad Core Asus desktop for $750 and a $300 netbook (with 6 hours battery) and that would have been perfect, especially with a powerful desktop on a 1080p TV, way less than one expensive Apple laptop, but it's not something I want to worry too much about, college is about friends, clubs, having a good time, and most importantly studying, but I just need one good TV to last me 4 years. Yea thanks for recommending me a good LG model, I've been looking into that, but I'll probably end up getting a good 32 or 37, 40 might be too big.

If you are willing to "step down" to a 32" TV, I would highly recommend the Sony Model Number KDL-32L5000. It is a fine TV for a dorm room, bedroom, or anyplace where a quality smaller TV is needed. Sony makes fine TVs for gaming, so that would fit right in with your requirements for the perfect TV for college.

Also, I agree with MrBobb. Although I was also valedictorian of my high school class, I soon found out that I was competing with a lot of other valedictorians and other brilliant folks when I got to college. It wasn't nearly the piece of cake I thought it would be.

Good luck to you.

This happened to me in 6 grade. I used to breeze through. Mom would ask me, why aren't u doing homework, and I said I already did them all while the teacher was yapping. Grade 6 I moved to a different school and this &$%# always was top of the class. No matter how hard I tried I always stayed #2 second fiddle... arrrrgghhh.

So this is not the input you asked for, but I'm going to give it anyway:

Having semi-recently been through the college experience while also being an electronics hound, my advice is to only buy components you wouldn't mind throwing away someday. This is partly because anything in your dorm room is subject to being trashed (yes, even the honors dorms, and whatever off-campus place you inevitably move to later on) and because when you graduate and actually start making money, you'll be able to buy a much better set.

If you've got to buy something, go cheap.

Oh, and on the roommate situation, if you can help it, don't room with anyone you haven't met before. The risk ain't worth it
