Got the plasma, lost my hobby....

1551 Views 15 Replies 14 Participants Last post by  prjoseph
Now that I've got the plasma, the HDTivo, the Denon receiver and DVD player, I've now lost one of my favorite pastimes, window shopping for this stuff.

I spent a lot of time reading on line, shopping in stores, comparing prices and warranties and reputations and so on and so forth. It was fun - thrill of the hunt and all.

Now I've made the kill, got all the cool toys and there now no reason to set foot in Good Guys or Fry's or Magnolia or anywhere else. I got better stuff than they do.

What do I do now? ;-)

You have a new hobby - watching anything that is transmitted in HD. That's all I do. Even Biker Boyz had me entranced.

Yeah. Now you have to enjoy your new toy. But don't worry. I'm sure that in several years, your hobby for shopping for TVs and stuff will come about again. For example, when LCD officially beats plasma, yuo will want an LCD instead.
I can relate.

There are two types of people in this forum. The first is here to just find the best possible solution for themselves and once done, is satisified, and will enjoy the product.

The second is here for the sake of the hobby itself. The hobby is not watching television. Its about knowing the products, getting excited about improvements and advancements, and dreaming about OLED paper thin pulldown screens for the livingroom. It has nothing or very little to do with watching source material. Give these guys AVIA HD test patterns and they'll be happy.

I'm the second group (although the part about the test patterns is pushing it a little bit.. that only satifisfies me for a few minutes).

I think it can be just as exciting holding out for that dream 1080p 40" LCD for $2k versus just going out and buying a plasma today.

I never stop reading or window shopping. I really like looking at the various Technologies available to the consumer.

My wife goes in one direction and I go in the other. She always knows where I'm at, I don't know if this is a good thing or not!:)

Soon u will be on your way browsing at the bigger, higher resolution plasma with several billions of colors. You can always put the older, smaller plasma in a bedroom or study! Your significant others may want to watch different HD programs at the same time.
Nuke,

I never gave up the other hobby.

I was well known among my friends (and even in some audio news groups) for my never ending "ultimate loudspeaker quest." I was at it for years, testing every speaker I could find in every city I traveled to. (It also included crazy sojourns to insane, anti-social custom-building audiophile dens as well). I finally bought one but the hobby continued as I went into writing about High End Audio, specifically speaker reviews.

And then came looking for a display. Seems I can't stop. Must be something constitutional.
Ya, I still keep up here and in stores, but much less than I used to. It's still a lot of fun seeing what's on the horizon, the newest and best technologies, lusting over gear I don't have. :D

On the flip side I've developed several new hobbies, like watching all my old DVDs, listening to all my old redbook CDs and discovering DVD-A and SACD, keeping track of new releases/new bands, etc. It''s funny the new sound system/plasma has renewed my love of music and movies which has led to all kinds of new activities, seeing movies in theaters again, going to concerts again (I was shocked when I realized the other night at a concert that it was the first I'd been to in over a year). It's good stuff. Enjoy! :D
Set up an HTPC , you'll never finish that hobby!

Rich,

Just out of curiosity (and a little off-topic), what loudspeaker ended your quest?

enigma
[OT} Enigma, I had the Quad ESL 63 electrostatics mated to the Gradient Subwoofers - a dipole subwoofer set designed specifically to mate with the ESL 63. The sound, in my relatively small but acoustically marvelous room, was astounding. However that set-up was mighty big and while the electrostatics had their own charms, I began to long for some of the qualities one finds in dynamic speakers. Unfortunately the sound quality characteristics of the ESL 63s had really spoiled me, pointing out the colorations of most box speakers. Thus...the quest for electrostatic transparency, expansiveness of imaging, combined with the physicality of the dynamic loudspeaker sound. I eventually ended up with Von Schweikert VR-4 Gen II speakers which pretty much did all of that.

But of course the quest never really stopped and I continued keeping an eye out long afterward. Just like my plasma purchase. And lemme tell ya, I heard some truly astonishing systems in some well-heeled audiophile homes, and had the good fortune of having many incredible speakers pass through my place as well. But it's hard to keep up two such hobbies and for now Home Theater has cast it's spell. [/OT]

Yeah, I 2nd that idea, esp if you like time & $$ sinkholes. I started with an HTPC, although it originated with ripping all 300 CDs to a PC. Then I decided I wanted to rip DVDs. Then I decided I wanted any piece of audio/video we own on demand in any room of the house. Then I found out about DVDs being recorded in 480p, and wanted at least an EDTV display.

This weekend I'm putting up an HDTV antenna so I can receive OTA HD without paying a monthly fee.

I bought an MX-800 RF/IR remote. Next weekend/months, I'll spend moving all the equipment to a closet, running wires in the crawlspace/walls, so I can hide every piece of equipment other than the TV & speakers and still control them as if they were in front of me.

I thought that would be it. But then this jerk in the HTPC forum told us about his complete HTPC-controlled drapes/lights, sync'ed with what he happens to be watching. [i.e., pressing the "watch DVD in theater mode" button on his remote closes the drapes, dims the light to 50% while the movie is starting up, once the credits roll the lights dim to 80%]. If he watches TV, only 1-2 of the drapes that happen to glare off his plasma get closed.

You can't post something that cool without expecting me to run out and try and do that too.

And there's about 101 other projects down that HTPC/home automation pipeline...

Oh well, I've taken up flying again recently. It's been a few years and I'm doing a tailwheel transition course in a Citabria. Went out and did some spins today. :)

I absolutely hate that part. I've watched some of the stupidest damn movies since I first took the HD plunge. AWFUL AWFUL movies. Last night I watched this crap movie "Just Married" on HBO. The movie was so boring and useless...but I just couldn't turn it off because the picture quality was amazing.

:(

I *never* would have watched this movie on purpose before I went HD.

Yep That's where I am at now. I was ready to start off with a Shuttle box until I discovered the HTPC forum, Hi Def cards etc. Now I postponed any purchase until I get thru the FAQ. But I still managed to win the 4th place trophy at the US Amateur Chess Tournament over memorial Day weekend. I need to take a vacation to enjoy my plasma.
