graphics card- quality not speed....

889 Views 9 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  Paul Bigelow
i've been reading hundreds of reviews about the new 8xxx series and the 2xxx ati cards on how fast they are and how they can handle games of crazy resolutions

but is there any web site etc that has a in depth look at the video quality that the cards output

i have a quick enough system that never maxes out cpu usage on hd material so speed isn't a real big issue but the quality of the output is

ie color rendering, decoding ability, dac quality etc

i use a crt projector via the dvi/vga analog output on a 8600gts card

just dont know whether to stick with nvidia or go the ati route

for now, stick with nvidia. I have found their ability to integrate with theater equpment and software is more reliable. The card you have now is more than capable to display HD content. FLAME ON ATI LOVERS!
There really isn't much data as far as something concrete.

THe SD HQV and HD HQV benchmarks are about all there are out there.

With the SD HQV both ATI and Nvidia are in the 130+ range which is as close to perfect as you can get I think.

When it comes to HD it's such a mixed bag with mpeg2 HD, blu-ray and HD-DVD. So many codecs, drivers and OS combinations right now that I'm not sure anyone has a deffinitive answer.

If you've got an 8600GTS I don't think you'd have any reason to switch.

After doing some research of my own I purchased the EVGA OC 8600GTS

Money wasn't an issue so I really think the 8600GTS is a great card for HTPC.

I wouldn't switch if I were you. If anything see what the next generation comes out with and purchase then.

My only flame is to say that inviting that kind of response is stupidity. Both manufacturers cards are more than capable for most HTPC applications. You really can't loose with either. Unless you're worried about high end 3D gaming the card you have at this point is almost irrelevant.

Are you unhappy with what you have now? Is it incapable of producing what you want it to produce? If not, then sit back and enjoy. Spend that money on adult refreshment instead.
Hello,

This is my first post ever in any forum
. I am building an HTPC and was wondering the same thing about graphics cards. I am looking at the MSI NX7600GT Diamond Plus GeForce 7600GT 256MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 HDMI HDCP VIVO Video Card. Should I upgrade to the 8xxx series? I am not planning on doing much gaming, should I care about Direct X10?

The 8600 and 8500 have a signigantly upgraded video acceleration engine.

It offloads a crapload of work for H.264 decoging making blu-ray and HD-DVD playback much easier on your CPU.

If I was building today regardless of CPU I'd be looking at the 8500 and 8600 exclusively for HTPC use.

Next month when the ATI cards are out I would consider one of the HD2600s as well.
IMind you are right. I will start taking myself wayyyy to seriously. I hope to follow in your footsteps. PLease let me know, if i start to have too much fun. Thanks for getting me back in line.

FOR THE RECORD: I have been quite happy with the ATI cards I have owned in the past. I just prefer the way the nvidia cards and drivers have played with all my other pc stuff.
Two thumbs up for the EVGA 8600GTS which will probably replace an 8800GTS. HDCP, works well with Power DVD Ultra Blu-Ray and HD-DVD look great, SD DVD and WMVHD is amazing. Passes 3:2, jaggies, other cadences with ease. Digital TV looks fine and will evaluate real HDTV tonight. No problems noted. CPU usage is way down for the HD Disc formats (about 40% less than the 8800GTS) -- great for CPU challenged systems. There may be some tradeoff in ultimate performance for gaming so keep that in mind.

Asus P5N32e-SLI, Intel E6600 overclocked about 10%, 4GB RAM, XBox drive for HD-DVD and SD DVD, Philips SPD7000BD for Blu-Ray. Running at [email protected] 32-bit color depth via VGA (yep, using a CRT -- for me LCD can't touch it).
