I continue to read that a gray screen will vastly improve black levels and color accuracy with a DLP projector. Namely, many people are using the Stewart Grayhawks. I wandered to their site, but I couldn't find pricing. Currently I have a pull down Dalite Matte which screen, and it tends to curl. I'd be interested in a nice fixed mount style screen, with a wide black border to hide the halo effect of my DLP. How much is something like this? I've heard they can get pretty expensive, but I really have no idea where to look...

I am about to get the Da-Lite High Contrast De-Mat 106" 16:9 screen in a permwall for use with a Sanyo XP18N for about $500. I hear the Greyhawk is quite a bit more expensive, but haven't seen a price. Is the Greyhawk that much better? I know the greyhawk is a higher gain (0.6 vs. 0.95), but with 2000 lumans, I think the Da-lite will give me a more pleasing image. Am I off base and is that the tradeoff between the Da-lite and the Steward grey screens?

I just bought a da-lite high contrast 80x45 16:9 screen myself. The screen, with shipping, is about $400. The price for a grayhawk of that size is around $900. From what I've read on here, the dalite material is very similar to the grayhawk, but the grawhawk has a better build quality. For me, I couldn't justify the difference in price.

The Greyhawk is not at all like the Da-Lite. I think Don Stewart elaborated on this in a previous post (it was only a few days ago too...). Anyways the Da-Lite grey screen is just a matt gray screen, whereas the Stewart Greyhawk has an optical coating to increase it's gain. The gain of the base coat of paint in the Greyhawk is comparable (if not darker) to the gain of the Da-Lite grey. This reduces the amount of light bouncing around the room and absorbs reflected light off the walls and the optical coating means that there is a smaller brightness penalty than the Da-Lite. The screen is also less susceptible to ambient or reflected light off-axis.


The Greyhawk is definitely worth considering despite the formidable price difference. Get a sample and let your eyes decide! (although you won't get the full benefit without a full screen test)

Does anybody have any idea what this "optical coating" might be, or how it might be duplicated. My installation is rather unique thus requiring a DIY. Otherwise I would save up for a Greyhawk.

I have no idea what the optical coating is, I imagine that each manufacturer closely guards the composition of the coating they use to obtain gains above a matt screen. What is so special about your installation? I know Stewart custom manufacturs all their screens, they may be able to accommodate your needs.
