Grayhawk RS with Ruby?

1074 Views 11 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  CKL
I'm completing a new construction and picked a Grayhawk at the time we needed to make a decision for an in the ceiling installation. the idea was to pair with infocus 7210. Now we're actually ready to install, I'm wondering if vw100 might be better purchase.

There'll be controllable ambient with 81' diagonal screen. About 14' throw with 11' viewing. Many thanks.

BTW, I'll be able to get Sony employee discount so may be financially more appealing but not sure how long I'll have to wait for availability.

They are available right now from some people. Read a few posts .

Also the picture will be much much much much better than the infocus.

To calculate brightness use my brightness thread

use the "Matte White" graph as the Grayhawk is only slightly dimmer (.95 gain)
Tryg,

do you disagree with me when I say that the gain is a bit misleading on gray screens. The Firehawk is stated at 1.2-1.3.. but I found it looked no brighter than my 1.0 matte white(no matter where I put it) and the greyhawk rs looked quite a bit dimmer. For some reason it seems to me that most grey screens don´t look as bright to the eye as the gain suggests.. can that be?
You are correct. To my eye Firehawk looks like 1 gain and most gray look about .8

no matter. I only recommend 2.0 and greater ;)

One thing that affects this is that gain ratings are basically for the brightest spot on the screen. The Firehawk may be something like 1.2 in the brightest spot, but .6 near the corners from some seating position. In that case it wouldn't surprise me if it looked dimmer than a 1.0 matte white overall. But it should be a little brighter than a matte white and one angle for at least a small spot. Both the Firehawk and Grayhawk have fairly high gain layers. A 1.8 gain non-gray angular-reflective screen (something like the gain layer of the Firehawk) would also have this effect of the brightest spot being brighter than the dimmest spot in most setups (longer throw and far seating tend to be more uniform).

At the screen size mentioned here I think the Grayhawk sounds like a reasonable choice for a screen. But of course personal preferences can vary. And I would personally go for the VW100 over the 7210 for the vast majority of setups. IMO, they are in somewhat different leagues.

The true grain of the Grayhawk RS is about 0.91. Grayhawk was 0.96 and the RS lowered that to about 0.91.
tccaux,

You should really reconsider the use of a gray screen all together. The Contrast of the projector doesn't need it. The Infocus may but it's also a bit brighter. All this depends on the size of the screen of course.

But you'll see if you use a grey 10' screen AND use long throw AND account for bulb dimmage AND you close down the iris to get 5000:1 you could get as low as 2-3 footlamberts of brightness. :(

I'm not saying Gray screen couldn't work but I wouldn't go over 7 feet wide.
Tryg. He will be using a 81"D screen! It is going to be real bright no matter what. A .91 gain might not be a bad idea no matter how the bulb ages.
oops missed that. Should look great!
This is very helpful.
How well will 100" diag firehawk in mostly light controlled room work, any one else with same set up?Seriously considering Ruby if price drops after ces and nothing else looks bet ter for the money.
I've tried Ruby at 100inch diagonal Grayhawk RS. Its lumen output is enough for such setup. If you only need 81 diagonal, then there is no problem at all. Grayhawk RS is better than old Grayhawk and Firehawk. RS makes the screen texture be less visible and shows better color than that at GH and FH.
