I am looking for a great stand alone cd player under $700usa. I want HDCD and cdr capablility. I have looked and read about the NAD 541i(I like the 24bit dacs!), the Rotel RCD 1070(18bit dacs), and the Integra CDC 3.1(multi disc).

I have also looked at marantz, but no HDCD support.

Any input on the above mentioned cd players would be much appreciated. Do you know of another in this price range that would be better?

Thanks

Matthew

update: now I am looking at the AhTojeb or the Music Hall

I went through a similar exercise last year after having previously owned the NAD 541 (not i). The 541 had the HDCD and Burr-Brown DACs but had issues with CDRs which I believe was corrected with the i version. I liked the player somewhat but the CDR incompatibility drove me crazy.

Anyways, after researching various players, I ended up with the Music Hall MMF-CD25. This player is built like a tank, has the Burr-Brown 1732 24/96 DACs, uses the Philips CD-10 transport, contains OPA 2134 op amps, has the HDCD decoding, and sports both coaxial and optical outputs as well as standard RCA analog outs. In my opinion, this is the best CD player for the price out there. I would definitely put it above the other players on your list. You can check them out at http://www.musichallaudio.com and I purchased it from a dealer on Audiogon. Its been almost 9 months and the only issue is that it sometimes (

Thanks for the information. I did some research already and found a guy that will give me that cd player for $499. He also recommended the Cambridge audio D500 SE Compact Disc Player. It goes for about $350 and has a ton of great reviews. Have you looked at that one, or do you know anything about it?

To answer the various questions...

I paid $450 from Quest for Sound (in PA) and they threw in some Iso-pads as well.

As for the Shanling/Music Hall situation, I heard about that after I bought mine and they look and are identical (I guess). I believe you can get the Shanling for even less...

Again, great CD player. I didn't get a chance to listen/compare it to the Cambridge Audio 500se, but it was on my list as well.

Cheers,

Scott

One more thing, if you look on audiogon.com, you'll find several different vendors offering super-modded Music hall CD-25 players for around $700. Each vendor performs different mods but they all claim increased soundstage, attack, etc. and put this CD player in the class of >$1500 players. I'm tossing around the idea of sending mine in for mods...

Cool, thanks for the tip, I did some research after you said that and it looks like there is three different modders out there for this player.

1. http://www.referenceaudiomods.com/Me...Code=MUSICHALL

$358.24 for mod only

2. http://www.6moons.com/audioreviews/m...ll/cd25.2.html

$350 for mod or $750 for mod and machine

I think this is the same as #1 above?

3. http://www.responseaudio.com/RA%20CD%20M.htm

$1200 just for the mod!

I think this one is the coolest but it is out of my range!$1200mod+$350machine

I didnt have time to do all the research, but if you get a chance let me know what you think the best ones are in order 1-3.

This is cool.

Thanks

Matt

the plot thickens, which one will I buy the music hall modified or the marantz modified. tough call, but we will see.

Do you own one?It doesnt do hdcd but your right from what I read it may not be a issue especially with that upsampling upgrade.

Scott what mod guy do you like best so far?

Matt...

Did you ever come to a decision re: the CD Player? Which one did you pick ... I'm in the same place you were back in April, and am now considering the CD-25...
